Why you should never make fun of/ rag on the military.

Tonight I made a poorly written and delivered joke, making fun of the military. An ex-marine was sitting at the bar. I made the joke to do the whole "I'm making fun of what you do but in all seriousness you're fine it's just a joke." He was drunk. He grabbed the mic, and I let him have his two cents.
My views on the military are incredibly far left. I am very anti-military, and I am against war and all that it accomplishes. I know, I'm a cultural hypocrite by default. I'm currently re-evaluating my views as I type. However, I felt like it was a good idea to express my opinions to him. It was not.
He talked about the humanitarian aid that the marines give world-round, and then he broke the mic by kicking the mic stand to the ground. I left the stage after failing to find the missing piece.
Later on, as he left, I went up to him, apologized, and asked if everything is alright. He said it's cool.
Later on, near the end, there was Joke Improv. World's worst slogans was the game, and the suggestion was Marines. I went up, said,"We're peaceful!" and kicked the mic stand over, therefore calling back to that tense moment that some people witnessed. During the game, a man from the audience, a friend of the marine, came up to within an inch of me and started drilling me about why I thought it was okay to to make those two jokes. The angelic Dax Jordan asks the man to leave the stage, and he does.
Improv was over, 12:30 at night, I immediately bolted and went for my bike. The man questioning me before came out, with a friend. The man continued to question me, I was avoiding conflict as much as possible, diffusing the situation. The man wasn't looking for a fight. His friend, however, was. Luckily, the other angel there, know here as vheath, was able to further diffuse the situation.
I can feel that the situation wasn't completely diffused. I am wondering if I should skip a week or two at that mic. Maybe someone could bring a gun or a knife (I've already had a knife pulled on me while doing comedy. Twice. If there's anything that kills tempo and momentum, it's having your life threatened.)
The moral: The army screws people up. During the drilling, the man asked me if I knew what it was like to watch someone die. I said I did, and then he starts going off about how the marine has PTSD, and how it haunts him. I wouldn't doubt that him and his friend had it as well. It can cause people to do irrational things, especially when mixed with alcohol like in the situation I'm describing. Don't do it. It's not a gamble worth taking.
