it was an incredible year for stand-up albums..... Braunger, Glass and Proops all had great albums (i don't think i ever said i didn't like it, just that it was the most negative album he's put out... i'm a huge Proops fan... 'Joke Book' is still my favorite.) ... it wasn't easy to not include them.
honestly, i think it's a great commentary on where stand-up is, that even after a list of ten great albums, there's still probably ten more great albums. in addition to the three you mentioned here. other worth mentioning: Moshe Kasher, Mirman, Big Jay Oakerson, Dwight York, Nick Di Paolo, Stephen Lynch, Dan Naturman, Burnham... all of these were strong albums... we just felt the others were more deserving of the top ten placement.

Dylan, sorry if I misunderstood. I think I got your final take on Proops confused with someone else. I do remember your tweet about Proops' CD being so negative.
To be clear, I liked your list overall and sympathize with the challenge of picking just 10 CDs. And I couldn't agree more that the overall quality of standup today is better than it's ever been. Mutual admiration! Yay!

heres another list that mulaney was left out of :

Bo Burnham:Bo Burnham
Eugene Mirman:God is a Twelve Year Old Boy with Aspergers
Greg Giraldo: Midlife Vices
Jon Reep: Methro Jethro
Artie Lange: Jack and Coke
Macbarth? How'd you get the script to my Shakespearean one-man show?davidlidsky and macbarth: very well said, guys.
Thanks though.
And I totally forgot about Mirman. "God is a Twelve Year Old Boy With Aspergers" is fantastic. Listened to it in the car on a long drive. The voice he does for "I'll turn you into salt!"..haha.
And the iTunes list...almost too broad in terms of style. It's just weird to compare Katt Williams to Eugene Mirman. Completely different audiences/intentions. Just another reason these lists are tough to take seriously.

Well, I loves me some Doug...and I love "Professional Humoredian" (as already mentioned)...but the #1 comedy album of 2008 was Louis CK's "Chewed Up"...
Actually, no, I don't "have to agree"...
I don't think that Aziz had a bigger year as a stand-up comic than John Mulaney did in 2009. I didn't have an Aziz Ansari cd in my car cd changer from my drive from Seattle to Portland for the Bridgetown Comedy Festival to the recent end of the Seattle International Comedy Commpetition...like I did with my John Mulaney cd.
Here's the level of respect that I have for "The Top Part". I purposefully sat down family, friends and other comedians to make certain they heard as much of John Mulaney's cd as it took to make them run out and buy themselves their own copy...or, in the case of my fellow comedians, enough for them to realize that we had to step our game up to match the precision and efficient comedy power that John displays on this cd.
However strong Aziz may be on "Parks & Recreation"...and whatever his value in "Funny People" was...for someone like me, who doesn't watch "Parks & Recreation" and isn't enough of a Apatow/Sandler/Rogen fan to have needed to see "Funny People" yet...but who IS an avid consumer of stand-up comedy cd's...it's not even a question, FOR ME, as to who had the most impact, who had the better year...
So, to answer your question:
My answer would be "No."
Now...from what I've read, I know that Aziz is coming out with his own stand-up comedy special in 2010...so, if I was writing about stand-up comics to watch in 2010, I might actually put Aziz on that list...but I wouldn't DREAM of putting John on that list...because in 2009 he's released a product that is the culmination of his entire career, he doesn't have a reputation as someone who quickly develops and rotates material...if anything, he's probably more likely to spend his time on television and film products that will likely make him a stand-up comic that you WON'T BE ABLE to watch in 2010.
Well, that's fine...and I have no problem with putting Kumail on a list for 2010.
I actually don't have any problem with you putting John Mulaney on the list, really...as predictions are a crap shoot anyway...
But if you weren't paying attention to John Mulaney in 2009, when he put out the best stand-up comedy cd of the year...and if you left him completely off your list of the "10 best comedy albums of 2009", which honestly has nothing to do with what you might think of what they could do in the future (or even what they've done in the past) but what they did THAT year...then you missed something wonderful...
...and to say that putting him on a list that suggests that he might do something more in the future only highlights the fact that you didn't think that the product of his life's work so far didn't measure up in your opinion. And that's just foolish...
pg--But, again...lists are lists...and it's not like I've got a dog at this dog show...so, it really means nothing to me that you left him off this specific list. Whatever. But, if you claim to be a knowledgeable and informed source regarding stand-up comedy and you put out a list that purports to depict the "best comedy albums of the year" on it and you put on lesser examples and skipped a far stronger effort...then, as lists are created to do, some of the conversation that you inspire might point out your mistakes.--seattle
PS--I'm guessing I won't be the next Seattle comic to get a write up on Punchline now, eh?![]()
Sigh. Sometimes I let my strongly voiced opinions push my marketing and promotion goals into the mud, don't I?
Ah well, there's always Stagetime or Shecky, right?![]()

Dude - let it go.
You can say his opinion sucks - and I believe you have - but by the very nature of it being his "opinion" it can't be wrong.
What's the rest of your top ten, btw?
(For the record, I do my lists in January because there's always something coming out late - this year it's Proops and Stanhope and Tompkins, for example. But I can't see Mulaney not making my Top Ten.)
Mulaney better get a bodyguard, pg will take this to the extreme.

This cd blew my mind.
yes, but you can't tell an author (or group of authors) that they are wrong when they are stating their opinion. as far as generating discussion goes, i don't think that's why people write lists. i think they write lists to tell us their opinion. and you posted here to let us know your opinion.
(circle of life!)
No offense intended, Doug, but don't tell ASTers (moderators, no less), how or what to post. Punchline posted a link to their list on AST, a discussion board, and discussion ensued.
offense taken. i didn't tell anyone (moderator or otherwise) how or what to post. my first post was a joke about how opinions are wrong when you don't agree with them. see, i was defending the author(s) because my album was on the list! (i love j. mulaney, by the way.) then itslikeimsaying implied that, with all of their resources, punchline mag should have reached his conclusion about what albums should be on the list. so i responded, again in a non-heated manner. you know, like having a discussion.
the super moderator has spoken.
(i shall recuse myself from this thread)
No love for Pete Correale's: "The Things We Do For Love"?
That was such an amazing hour. Seriously. One of the best around. I mean it. Go listen to it now.
