Re: AST Top 20 Poll #10

After the voting is closed, this thread can become the 'Hey I voted for so and so' and 'Why didn't whats-his-hoozle' do better thread, which sort of addresses your concerns.

I think one of the things I love about this poll is that it doesn't contain the 'social aspect of list-making' that you describe, which leads to dishonesty and group-think.

One way to get around that would be to only allow people that posted a list view the "list thread" and the "discussion thread", and to disallow editing in the "list thread".

Might be more trouble than it's worth, though.

Send a PM to Itslikeimsayin with your list - I'm sure he'll allow it (but you do have 11 more days to vote).

I am more curious about the results of this one than the past few. Its become a foregone conclusion that PFT will win, but I wonder if leaving LA and the Louis CK show at the Wiltern/his amazing travelogue will open it up for Louis to gain some ground.

His career is going great and this is just a silly opinion poll that doesn't really matter, but I do hope that Jim Gaffigan will rank higher than honorable mention this time. King Baby is so funny.

You know, I'm very surprised by the small amount of working professional comics I like a lot. I've found that a lot of my favourites are either dead, not working, or doing the same thing over and over. My list has gotten considerably thin after the first few.

I could not feel more opposite than this. I don't consider myself the easiest laugh ever by a long shot, but feel like I could do a top 50 if it were allowed. And I don't say this in a 'look at me, I know a lot of comedians' way, but more in a 'What a great time to be a comedy fan' way.

Shauno, I implore you to post your list once the results are in and point out where it goes from great to just good. Not as an invitation to disagreement, but just because I'm curious about your tastes...

which is why I'm voting for Richard Jeni.
Well I missed Stanhope last time he was in town, but then again no other comics ever come here ever. So I dunno when people are good, really, just whether I dig 'em.

I thought No Refunds was certainly up to par...and while he talks on that special about being "out of shit" I just saw a great newish chunk on youtube. There are a few lines I'd heard before but he's fleshed it out into something quite good. Search for "Sex and Shame."

Shane: A big part of his appeal is that he has something to say. He doesn't bring up the big issue and then make a stupid, easy joke about it, ::cough::billmaher::cough:: he often uses humor to illustrate a point. Which is why he gets compared to Hicks and stuff. The other part of his appeal is that he's a big degenerate. And it isn't an act. Perversion and depravity are fun to hear about.

As I mentioned, he points out how trying to make points could eventually be a problem: any given person only has so many worthwhile things to say. I wonder if he's not selling himself short, though. He's not gonna start a family and have new material about changing diapers, but maybe in the years to come he'll be able to find something to say about life as a dirty old man.

For me, I don't tend to follow the current trends in comedy very closely. I have a few select comedians that I like a whole lot and I end up watching/listening to the same material repeatedly, learning something new each time.

I think the biggest factor is that I don't get into the somewhat 'normal' sounding comedians very well. I don't mean that by their material, but more about how their routine is set-up/delivered. I'm much more drawn into the sort of 'odd-ball' performers, I guess you could say, and being an aspiring comedian (like a lot of people here) it feels like I'm wasting my time when committing myself to experiencing another type of comedian. It's a bit difficult to explain, mostly because I can tell I am sort of bullshitting myself.

There are definitely many 'normal' comedians I enjoy, but it's just that at this point, I find it much better to watch the ones I can relate to and hopefully help build myself up from that. I do realize, however, that I'm pigeon-holing myself and missing out on a whole lot of funny.

To put it bluntly, though, my favourite comedian of all-time is Andy Kaufman and my favourite working comedian is Zach Galifianakis. I can really dig into their unconventional styles. I suppose one could say I'm much more into the theatrics of comedy, but I wouldn't be able to say that for certain because I'm still trying to figure out exactly what I'm talking about. What I'm looking for from this site is the opportunity to expand out of my sheltered tastes and utilize the many resources I haven't yet tapped into.

I hope this informs you a little better about myself, rather than me posting my pathetic list.

The response was great out of the gate, but has slowed considerably over the last few days. Don't forget to vote. Polls close Wednesday at midnight Pacific.

Doug and the rest of The Unbookables really don't get enough credit. There is just about no mention of Sean Rouse, who I have found really funny. I'm hoping that Eugene Mirman will get a little boost and come on guys, Lisa Lampenelli and Margaret Cho not even on the list?!!! WAKE UP AMERICA!!!

Night gathers, and now my snark begins. It shall not end until it gets hacky. I shall take my wife(... please!), hold no lands, father no negative ratings. I shall wear no crowns and win no AST Top 20 Rankings. I shall live and die by my posts. I am the LOL in the darkness. I am the fire that burns against the trolls, the sneer that guards the realms of men from Kyle Cease's Comedy Boot Camp. I pledge my life and honor to the AST's Watch, for this night and all the nights to come.

Everyone wishes they were cool like me, and here's the first step: write a list of your 10 current favorite working comics and send them to itslikeimsayin@yahoo.com - I did it, and look at me!
