I agree that it is weird. You'd think that the structure could relax and tighten as they see fit.
However, I think it makes some sense. Whatever the show or project is that they do next, its the follow-up to Mr. Show. Both of them have been a part of some great things and some mediocre things since Mr. Show ended, but this series (or rather the next one) has the incredibly tough job of living up to Mr. Show to the comedy nerd, while aiming for a larger audience than Mr. Show initially received. It's a very different spot than most tv show creators find themselves, where getting something to air is such a hurdle that they can't entertain the idea that it might not be the right project.
