do not watch the video on keith's link if you're at work and uncontrollable laughter is unacceptable
EDIT: Like me, where I solve murder mysteries
What a great episode, probably my favorite non-guest episode. The father discussion was really fascinating stuff. And Matthew's flagrant interjections, especially during the talk about Sophie's Choice, were very funny.
agreed, i was listening to the ep real late at night as i was going to bed and was only going to listen to a bit of it, but i couldn't bring myself to turn it off in the middle of the whole father discussion. great stuff. i too have a bit of a strained relationship with my parents because their attitudes toward humor and swearing don't really allow me to be myself around them.
which reminds me, jimmy jimmy, you at least have one person who, when listening to the podcast, does nothing but listen to the podcast.
I listen on my bus ride in to work / first hour of work Friday mornings. It is definitely ritual-esque.
Family is always going to be a mess of an issue. As soon as I hit the age where I understood that parents didn't have any more a grand plan for raising kids than "whatever keeps rent paid and clothes clean" I forgave a lot of the personality tics / minor hypocrisies / failed promises.
Family tends to be absolutely devastating in the ways that Jimmy described (my own father paid someone to show up to my graduation on his behalf), but I know they're just trying to get along with their own world without me trying to force them to appreciate mine.
My father is currently going through bad health issues, and there have been a few times when I thought it was going to be the last time I'd ever see him. He always made sure to emphasize "I'm proud of you" rather than "I love you," which I think is interesting. This episode and the Paul F Tompkin's episode in particular really helped me appreciate how lucky I am to have supportive parents. My mom loves comedy and even listens to NNF with me in the car, and while I'm dad doesn't necessarily "get it" too much (although Rickles is also his favorite!) he's very supportive.
My sister is 4 years older than me and she still can't appreciate them, so I feel lucky that I've matured in some ways a bit sooner. And I'm glad I'm able to appreciate my father before it's too late.
Thanks for the show, guys and Stef.

Jimmy was hilarious last night @ Morty's. Thank ya kindly for the show sir. I'm anxious to hear about your thoughts on that place - I've only ever been to that club and cracker's in downtown indianapolis, so i don't know if they're on the list of clubs that "get it."
When Jimmy was talking about his dad not getting that he is already successful and respected I immediately thought of the Mr. Show guidance counselor sketch.

I'm fine with the prefacing. I wanted a New Order / Substance feeling for the type.

Love the show, but Jimmy was saying some dangerously false things on the latest episode about who has to register as a sex offender. He was claiming that only "real" sex offenders have to register in the sex offender database, such as those guilty of rape, child molestation/pornography, etc. Even wikipedia demonstrates this is not true with a cursory glance: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sex_off...exual_offenses.
"In New York and various other states, crimes that society does not necessarily view as sexual in nature are also considered to be registerable sex offenses, such as kidnapping, unlawful surveillance, "sexual misconduct" (such as mooning or streaking), unlawful imprisonment, and in some cases "sexually motivated offenses" (such as assault, burglary, etc.) that are not categorized as sexual offenses unless the court determines that the offense was committed pursuant to the offender's own sexual gratification.[19]"
A little further googling and research will show that a wide variety of offenses can force you to register as a sex offender and get listed on those database websites. Public urination is a common one. Got drunk with your buddies and pissed in an alley and a cop saw you? In some states, you're going to be on the database. In high school, my friend's father was caught giving guys consensual handjobs late night in the park one night because he was a confused, closeted bisexual or something. He had to register and is stuck on those websites for life. Don't assume every blip on that terrifying version of google maps is a pedo or rapist.

There are also a lot of items that should be flagged/put on a map, but aren't. Maps of deadbeat moms/dads, people who forget their kid in their car, or those who treat a pet like gold while yelling at a child are quick examples. The maps that exist might be more informational than accurate / representative.
I used Photoshop to clone out Mr. Jones and the text, but MSPaint on Windows (Start -> Run -> type MSPaint, hit 'OK') should work, or Paintbrush is a very good/free OSX equivalent.

I think it's a pretty threatening and discriminatory prejudice (and hence dangerous) to mentally label anyone who's had to register as a sex offender as a rapist or pedophile. There are many, many different types of offenses (both sexual and not at all) of several different types that can force someone to put their info into the database.
He didn't present himself as a certified authority of any kind, no, but he quite adamantly stated, several times over, that people guilty of offenses lesser than rape/pedophilia/child porn don't have to register as a sex offender, and all those blips on the website are people guilty of those things. If you look closely on most of those sites, they even list the specific offense that puts the person in the database, and it is more often than not something other than those three offenses.
All I'm saying is that he was stating factually false information with great conviction and certainty that can contribute to damaging prejudices, and I wanted to clarify for him and anyone that might not know.

Not true yet. I'll fix it tonight and make sure it says I'm the co-king of China with Ulysses S Grant. Then a lazy reporter will report on it, then another Wikipedia article can cite the reporter's story and it becomes fact.
Wikipedia isn't for facts, it's for a general consensus of currently-held opinions, which is why a lot of really testy topics are under severe lock-down, or will only allow very tame additions.
