I need to make a mix for some friends who only know the Toy Story songs and the Family Guy reference. It'll close with "I Want You To Hurt Like I Do," naturally.

I just came back from the library because I wanted to check out some cds by Randy Newman after hearing that song.

As much as message board arguments make me cringe, I would actually be entertained by hearing Jimmy, Todd, and Stefane talk about this on the show.

This might be of interest to Todd, Jimmy and anyone who's following the hit your kids/ positive discipline etc. debate it's an ep, of This American Life which has some interesting ideas practiced by a community outreach organization in Harlem:

    http://www.thisamericanlife.org/Radi...px?episode=364

Executive summary: Kids who are hit or have largely negative discipline do worse in school, kids who get positive reinforcement do better. This is compounded in poorer areas.

I don't want to get too deep into this, but I think Jimmy really gets it wrong on Glass-Steagall. If anything, its repeal has helped to soften the blow of our current financial crisis by allowing commercial banks to take over investment banks. Can you imagine how bad things would be if JP Morgan Chase couldn't have bought Bear Stearns, or if Bank of America couldn't have taken over Merrill Lynch?

There are deregulations that made this crisis worse, but the repeal of Glass Steagall isn't among them.

But again, I don't want to get bogged down in politics, I just wanted to point out some misinformation, since Todd asks if "the facts are in." In this case, I didn't think they were.

whenever someone catches me doing something weird or something embarrassing and they are laughing, I just look over towards them and turn up the behavior. it makes them laugh and it lets them know that I know that I'm acting weird.

One time, I was falling asleep at the wheel on a highway and these kids pulled up next to me and started doing a bottle drinking motion and mocking me because I was swerving. So, I caught up to them and as I started to pull up close, I put my head on the wheel and acted like I had totally passed out and I did it for about 3 seconds and then I lifted my head up and looked over and smiled. They were all freaking out and then they laughed and we had a moment.

    It was nice.

I didn't have the chance to listen yet, but have any of you noticed the prophetic nature of Todd's joke about bad credit commercials where the commercial is geared toward people with bad credit who sit at home and think, "Why should it be hard for me to get a loan if I'm not going to be able to pay for it?" Because you won't be able to pay for it! Todd does it in a funny way, but the point is the same. Or am I off? Those commercials where they're like, "Bad credit, no credit, we'll give you a loan regardless!" are part of this mess, right? And this is an example of one of those, correct?

-If the US decided to make 850 Yankee Stadiums around the country, that would probably not solve the economic crisis. There is a place for large public works projects, but they alone wont solve this. The idea of giving Americans money and they will put that money into banks and thus bailout the banks is a good one and its exactly the tax plan that Barack Obama has said over and over.

-Lots of people saw this economic crisis coming. Including the people you blamed. A major thesis of Alan Greenspan's was that no one knows exactly the point in which an economic bubble is at its apex and that you shouldn't pop it, but let it pop itself because during boom times more money runs in the system and that leads to innovation. That popping it prematurely could prevent future growth in that way.
I don't know that anyone saw how a downturn would manifest itself, but it was known that it would have to happen.

-Your idea that American's shouldn't have to make sacrifices, that we already have, leaves me flabbergasted. One good sacrifice that Americans should make is to eat less meat since that is a larger cause of global warming than your car. There are tons of sacrifices that Americans should make like car-pooling, taking public transportation and leaving within your means that Americans probably need to make.

-I agree that Obama and McCain should be more clear with their answers to questions, but if you can't think of 3 things that Obama stands for, thats on you, Jimmy. He outlines his tax plan, his plan to withdraw from Iraq while deploying some of those forces to Afghanistan and his plan to have the country be energy independent in 10 years every single time he gets on a microphone. He certainly could be clearer about his health care plan though. It sounds like you listen to him through your anger.

I guarantee you 90% of Americans would not put that money into a bank, they would spend it on stupid crap they don't need because very few people know how to save money. Or, they would use it to pay bills. Americans have money and they use banks already, and the banks still failed, so why not give it directly to banks so we know where its going, and so they can spend it on million dollar vacations, because even people who are in charge of money don't know how to spend their money

Keep in mind that just because they "should", doesn't mean they will. Americans' impact on the environment are inherent to the lifestyle that they lead. Besides, as long as Americans are distracted by electronic entertainment and news media that tells them that they can stop global warming by using better lightbulbs, then there's no incentive to change their lifestyle. Americans generally will not look at and do something about the impact that they have on their environment because it would force them to change their behavior, which they believe would cause them to lose many things.

There would be more people making sacrifices to keep their way of life now then making sacrifices to change our environment for the better. For instance, you have the current situation where Americans are destroying their own landbase, and the landbases of poorer countries and the third world. Now, let's say you had someone in office who would demand to have this be put to an end, and would issue multiple orders to round up all products which did this, and would make many actions illegal in order to preserve the environment. You would get people rioting in the streets, feeling almost certain that their way of life was under attack. You get a clash of Needs Of The Populace v Needs Of The Environment, with the populace not understanding the Needs Of The Environment, or at least choosing not to in order to preserve their own lifestyle. It would be hard to say who would win, but I would place my bets on the populace.

How do you actually get people to change their behavior? Incentives. Not moral incentives, but monetary. Make electric cars, and make them cheaper than normal cars. Set up free charging stations. Something like that. I'm not a social engineer, so I can't tell you. What I can tell you is that it's not very realistic with the set up that we live in now.

Do you see what I mean?

If Jimmy still reads this, and you guys saw Religulous, tells us fans what you thought of it on the show. I loved the Bill Maher on The View play by play.

listen, i think the most important thing this country needs to tackle is the new peppermint three musketeers. am i the only one who noticed it is a peppermint patty in rectangular form?? yet, i pay roughly twice as much? no, sir!

clearly, this is an attack on the american consumers' love of innovation, but it is an empty innovation, much like novelty shot classes with greek letters and the first season of "the wonder years" on dvd--how does this make our lives better?!? you guys know exactly what i am talking about. the cost of chocolate and peppermint combinations has sky rocketed during the bush years, why? OIL!

    (End Scene)

The following is a preview of my new character, the guy who ruins any conversation of substance.
