Thread: Comedy and Everything Else

For whoever it was that had trouble "getting through" an episode, the good news is 82's a short one, the bad news is there's a block of a few minutes that is repeated.

and the other bad news is that he rants about you at the end - but I've been there, you'll get through it

It really does have that skip? I thought I had a corrupted file!

Great segment with David Feldman, I love hearing those stories from the writers' room.

The skip is definitely in all versions of the file. Based on the one mention of KPFK in the episode, the file being saved as M4A instead of the usual MP3, and DF being the guest on yesterday's "Jimmy Dore Live," I'm guessing it was recorded by Jimmy while doing JDL. The latest CAEE episode may be nothing but stolen audio from those radio station fat-cats.

Good news: the new logo should be revealed in the next episode. I've sort-of known about it for a couple weeks and I like it a lot. It'll look good on sites, shirts, and anywhere else. It was put together by a professional comic illustrator that I can't link to yet. A lot of amazing submissions came in, it was a pleasant surprise in almost all cases.

I love the cast, but when you guys start talking about fox news I start to lose interest. Up here I'd need a fancy satellite and a living wage to watch fox news. However, I thought I'd bring the March 18th episode of the John Stewart show to your interest, where he does a 15 minute dismantling of Glenn Beck. I'd love to hear what Jimmy and Stef think of it.

Now off to listen to the new ep!

I like it when Jimmy gets political. I like Pop and Politics, but I think it would be more interesting if it were a panel-type show. For some reason I can't keep interested for too long if I'm only hearing one voice. Plus, multiple voices will tend to have differing viewpoints (at least on some things), which might lead to interesting conversations/debates.

Agreed. I was surprised to find that Graham hadn't been a guest on CaEE before, it was long overdue.

The man took multiple forms of transport just to appear on the show!

While I love the whole episode, there is a particularly brilliant section of dialogue between Jimmy, Stef, and Graham that stands out, covering everything from why undocumented immigrants should get driver's licenses, to why we must discern between democracy and capitalism. I am already onboard with the political stances, but the way they are articulated in this exchange between the three informed my opinion in new ways. I am going to bombard my conservative friends and family with a link to this edition of the podcast, and especially empathize that portion of the show.

I love the what-if scenario about fire departments being run like the health insurance, when that was pretty much exactly what happened.
"Subscribers paid fire fighting companies in advance for fire protection and in exchange would receive a fire mark to attach to their building. The payments for the fire marks supported the fire fighting companies. If the protected building were to suffer a fire, only their fire fighting company would attend the call to extinguish the fire. Even if competitor fire companies were closer to the fire they would not do anything to prevent further damage or extinguish the fire. This brought the fire mark system into disrepute. Municipal and rural fire departments supported by local taxation became the more popular solution."

It also led to people buying everything inside the house before saving it, among other atrocious things.

It's absolutely how fire departments started, but is either unknown by or quickly forgotten by most people. Privatization is perfectly fine for some businesses, but I can't imagine many wishing to have the military be outsourced.

That's all well and fine but how are Blackwater and Haliburton execs supposed to fall asleep on beds, er, bigger beds of money?

The joke about the roots of ElWood was simple and brilliant.

Shit, I guess America will just have to stay out of wars if you all want those companies to go out of business! That's why I'm hoping all your health care hopes come through- so as a nation you can treat illness and disease like terrorists (they sure kill more citizens than domestic or foreign terrorism ever has) and actually have thousands of people work toward stopping them.

If it helps, we can always pretend that the resource we're looking to exploit from starting a war for good health is "happyoil" and to spread "healthmocracy."

I was very surprised to get a shout-out from Stefane just for sitting in front of her at Pop and Politics and complimenting the show. Now I HAVE to throw some cash their way.

If only all things worked so easily, I'd suggest Stef name every person she sees. (Whether you do end up donating or not, thanks for going to the show!)

Can we get Bobby Miyamoto on the show? Never seen or heard his stand up but Todd and Jimmy were always raving about him.

    Re: Comedy and Everything Else

I want to pull a pre-face or todd-face real quick and just say to jimmy and steph that I really love this show and when the money is there I will be making a donation. You guys often hit on topics that relate to my life and your guests are always bringing new things to the table. So thanks for that.

I wanted to comment on the people wanting to be unemployed thing.
Last year had I not been able to get the extension I would have been in a very bad place. Either I would have had to go without food, electric, car insurance, my medication that I need on a daily basis or I will end up in the emergency room; Or I would have had to just break my lease and either live with a friend (who in many ways is worse off than me but he did at least have a job and could pay his bills and eat) or quit the boilermaker apprenticeship and move to florida to live with my dad.
The economy shouldn't have affected the contractors I work for like B@W and Foster Wheeler and NPS and a bunch of other international contractors worth god knows how much but even being in the union we still were getting getting fucked the last few years.
Jobs that were done in 12 weeks at 2 shifts of 7 days a week at 10 hours a day five years ago are now done in 6 weeks with 3 shifts with us working 7 days 8 hours. Which means more work, less overtime and more dangerous working conditions because the plants are cracking down on the contractors to push us more.
I'm still happy to be in a union but it's so upsetting because if some workers bring these kind of things of then you look like a whiner and a pussy. The opposite end of the spectrum is the company man who doesn't protect the men. It's just such a fine line and while, yes, we do have it good relatively that's no reason to ignore the fact that it could be better and was better at one time. Just as corporations keep increasing profits quarterly the union loses power at the same rate.

Anyhow. We work seasonally and normally we work 7 months of the year. 3 months off in summer and two in winter. This is when we collect Unemployment Compensation and no one likes being on UC for too long. First of all our health insurance is maintained only if we get a certain amount of hours per quarter. Second it's not enough money and you better hope you saved money from when you were working or else you are going to be scraping by.
Why not get another job? It's difficult because no one wants to hire someone that is going to leave without any notice when they get a call to go back to work.
