I'm a big Stanhope fan but I can't listen to his first two albums. Deadbeat Hero is good, and Something to Take the Edge Off is a lot mellower (he's got a bassist backing him).

My God, that "listener mail" episode was nothing short of an embarrassment. Jimmy's attempts to "address the concerns of listeners" were just awful - petty, mean-spirited, and pedantic. Not a fan, not a fan.

I'm still a fan (the discussion of race was very good) but I agree that the listener email segment was embarrassing, a low point for the show.

I can't help but think that people who didn't like the listener mail ep are the same kinda people who would have written those emails. I don't get it. I still love the podcast.

Jimmy's typical line of defense against the criticisms seemed to be:

1) "I'm a professional comedian and you're not"
2) Nitpicking and mocking

It's not that I disagree with Jimmy's stance on the whole Kyle Cease/bootcamp thing (I don't) but if he's going to take the time to address listeners who do disagree, then he shouldn't be so dismissive. It makes him sound really defensive and petty.

Gah, I don't want to keep harping on it. I really really liked this last episode a lot, the email part was the only thing I didn't care for. I thought the rest of it was fantastic.

If he converts over to the 2000's Dennis Miller, then you will hear me complain. I love the variety of this show, and I tune in to hear whomever is on mic say what they want to say. Makes riding my bike in traffic much more enjoyable.

I think it was more of a problem with e-mails themselves than anything:

E-mail vs. Talking discussions are always lopsided. One person can defend and clarify themselves, one person can't. Guess who's going to win that argument?

"Lets dissect this paragraph, figure out what it's saying, and then argue with what we think it says" is poor way to facilitate discussion or address concerns, is all. A misguided episode, I would say.

Jimmy was drunk during Kyle Cease first episode. He was stoned during episode 104. You could hear in his voice he has cottonmouth and couldn't remember shit. I know he likes to be throuogh but that episode was rough. They didn't drop the new ep but I figure Kyle is threatening a lawsuit or something like that. Kyle is interviewed on "Really Good Podcast" and goes on about how he manipulates every situation but has no insight that he should be ashamed at all. Apparently he won the comedy central thing by telling people he would say their names on his podcast if they voted for him. He bragged about it saying he created a "weird Obama cult." Jack-ass to the core.

Anyway, why do you think Cease is threatening action? Did you hear that somewhere? I doubt it since Jimmy himself said...

Just so everyone knows, The Stand Up bootcamp has caused a huge stir and huge controversy, and I offered Kyle a fair and honest forum to answer his critics. I told him I would be fair and give him all the time he wanted tell his story, and if you re listen to the show you will see that Kyle got about quadruple the mic time I got if not more. We did 3 hours so he could get everything out that he wanted to say, and I stopped several times during the show to ask him if he thought he was being treated fairly and he agreed, he even stayed after the taping to have dinner with us.

I told Kyle that I could not question what is in his heart, and that I gave him the benefit of the doubt that he had good intentions. I hold no animosity for KYLE and found him to come across as a nice guy who is very enthused about his project.

But Kyle cease is also a very public figure who is sellling something to other comedians and it is hugely controversial in the comedy community. If I didnt ask him hard questions it would have served no one. He needed and wanted me to ask him tough questions, get it? It is called doing an interview on a controversial subject and not a puff peace.

I tried to be completely fair to him and give him all the time he needed to say whatever he felt he needed to say-- again, we did three hours. I even started off the interview by letting Kyle talk for about a half hour just about himself and his background so people could get to know him as a person and what his struggles were and where he was coming from. I wanted to humanize him and give him the chance to present himself as a full person and not some characterization that I constructed. Again, I was really trying to be 100% fair and honest with Kyle.

So I doubt he's suing Jimmy.

Unless he fed Kyle some of Todd's soup. That I'd understand.

Hearing Kyle on the Dick and Darren podcast provides a fascinating juxtaposition to his CaEE interview where he's on the defensive. I previously chalked up the clumsiness of Kyle's riffing in the first part of the CaEE interview to nervousness related to having to address his critics but he seems just as awkward here. The way he nervously explains every joke reminds me of co-workers with low self-esteem who'd apologize every time they attempted to crack a joke. It's the kind of attitude that leads to packing in Starbucks gift cards in with the demo tape you send off to a club owner.
