it was pretty good and a lot less one-note than the trailer let on. i think it's worth seeing. wished a lot of people had more things to do in the movie. reminded me a lot of 'Meet The Parents' (probably because of Jay Roach).

    Re: Dinner for Schmucks

In a year that has already brought such miserable mainstream comedies as Date Night and Grown Ups, this was a nice surprise. It's got a great cast - including Chris O'Dowd, who I didn't even know was in this - and I thought it was consistently enjoyable throughout. It's really broad, too broad at times like all of the stuff with that stalker ex-girlfriend, but Jay Roach is good enough to make even an obvious joke work unlike a Shawn Levy or a Dennis Dugan. I thought Steve Carrel was pretty great in it too. His character veers wildly from being charmingly naive to borderline mentally challenged depending on what the script needs but Steve manages to keep the character sweet and funny enough to actually make him a somewhat believable and likable person by the end.

Then you didn't read this thread!

    His character was great though.

"Oh, really, are you any good?"
    "....I don't know."

I thought this movie had a lot of funny in it...it's not perfect or groundbreaking whatsoever, but it got the job done for me. Jermaine Clement was a great unknown addition and surprise and Paul Rudd always makes me smile for some reason.

I thought Date Night was pretty great, but maybe I just have a huge bias towards Steve Carell.

Just saw this and I thought it was pretty enjoyable. The whole mouse diorama stuff I found touching. I liked the twist that the intro makes it all seem funny and by the end you realize its this sad manifestation of Barry's failed marriage.

My only problem was the over-abundance of eavesdropping plot-progression. Its kind of lazy.

I like this film a lot. The mouse diorama was so sweet. Carell always knows how to tug at my heart strings. Also nice was the use of The Beatles' "Fool On The Hill". Gave the film a nice tone going in and going out. Zach and Carell's mental duel was hilarious. But I did get a bit tired of the farce that wove its way into the film. I attributed it to the French version, since they seem to like that whoopsie farcical stuff.

Probably one of the worst movies of 2010, so far!

I may have chuckled two or three times during the whole movie.

I really really did not like this movie. I caught it on a whim from Redbox and boy was it not funny. There were some amazing performances (Jemaine Clement, Zach Galifiankis, Chris O'Dowd), but it was really painful to watch. All of the plot points seemed insanely convenient, and as much as I enjoy him in other things, Paul Rudd did not come off as likable at all...which kind of kills the whole thing. The alternate takes and deleted scenes were easily 10x funnier than the movie, so maybe it's Jay Roach. I also cannot believe that they had Nick Kroll do absolutely fucknothing in it. Come on.

Fuck was that disappointing. (Even going into it expecting to be disappointed.)

Mostly agree. I would single out Jemaine's character and Carrell's performance as true highlights.

I love how Zach gets so much billing in the film and he's not even in it for that long. But yeah, Jermaine Clement, and Steve really stole the film! After a string of crap like Evan Almighty, Dan in Real Life, nice to see Steve just go balls out zany again!

    Re: Dinner for Schmucks

I watched this the other night on HBO and it was one of the most tedious and stupid comedies I've ever seen. I liked Carell okay in it, but I think Rudd was miscast, and all the gags could be seen a mile before. It was really a chore to get through, but I stuck it out for Zach, who was also just okay.
