celebrate the inaugruation of our first black president by watching me and two other white people talk about movies, tuesday at 8:00 at ucb-la!
those white people were steve agee and dana gould. the eppy should be available soon on iTunes.
the next one is on feb. 3 and i've already booked the guests and they are awesome.
(must sleep now)
Dana Gould must have been great. Not to say anything less for Agee, who rocks as well. That's a really solid show.
New episode is up for download! Great episode as always. I liked the little twist on the Leonard Maltin game.
the twist will remain this tuesday, feb. 3, when i am joined by...i'm not saying!
(you almost got me)
i'm taping what could be the sexiest ILM ever tonight at 8:00 at ucb-la.
(it's free to get in for fucks sake!)
I think I'll post it here too (because its more on topic in this thread)...
Did you hear about Batman tearing DP of "Terminator: Salvation", Shane Hurlbut, a new one for "distracting" him off camera?
audio here
I love this podcast.
I must have listened to the Graham/Wayne ep 10 times.
(I have a long work commute)
Hey Doug:
I applaud you for trying to switch up the Leonard Maltin game, but I think it was better the old way. There's less sense of urgency when the guests aren't really competing against each other during the actual game play. One of the things that makes it fun was the tension of guests knowing that at any time, the other guest might know the answer.
Also, I think this new way makes it less fun for the listener. If the guest says they can name it in only 3 or 4 names, then the rest of the names are just plowed through and the listener doesn't get as much of a chance to "play along."
The new way also won't lead to those situations when you've said things like, "The listeners are probably going crazy," when neither guest gets it but the answer is obvious to a lot of listeners. I think those are some of the funniest times in the game.
In the end, it's not a big deal either way, but I just thought I'd share I liked it better the old way. Are you happy with the new format?
all the feedback i've gotten about the new format has been positive. so congrats on being the first naysayer. but you make good points, and perhaps it will revert to the old way. for now though, i'm having more fun with this version, and will try it again a third time at the next taping - which probably won't be until march.
(i'm very busy this month!)
There's a movie game I've played, at which Doug would clearly destroy...it wouldn't work on the podcast but it's fun for anyone with movie geek friends, so I'm gonna type out how to play nonetheless.
There can be any number of players, preferably arranged in something like a circle. Much like a blunt, play goes to the left. Someone starts off with a lob: either a famous actor who's in a lot of well-known movies, or a successful film with a big ensemble cast. If you don't like the lob you can reject it and make 'em pick another. As you go around the circle you alternate between films and actors.
So if I start off with Dustin Hoffman, Doug might say All The President's Men, then Itslikeimsayin' could say Ned Beatty, and so on. If quadp names a Beatty film...say, Ed and His Dead Mother...and Embiggen can't pull another actor from that movie, he can throw it back and challenge quadp to name one. If someone fails they're knocked out (or you can give 'em multiple chances, spell MOVIE or HORSE or whatever, depending how long you want this game to go on) and then whoever's next throws another lob.
I wouldn't be surprised if everyone already knew how to play this, but whatever.
i have played that, and everyone gets mad because i'm too good at it.
I'm not surprised, your knowledge of character actors is precockulous.

I think the new game rules kind of don't fit. The reason why it works for Name that Tune is because the more notes you hear, starting from one, the easier it is to know it. But, the way that the Leonard Maltin game works is by trying to guess the movie before it gets to the last few names which would give it away. For instance, if you're doing Jingle All the Way, you would be able to figure out the movie in two names no matter what. Part of the game is that you are supposed to name the movie before you get to those last two names.
Wait a second, am I wrong in remembering how the game is played?
When someone picks an amount of names they'll be able to guess it in and then you count out how many names you have to read, do you count from the bottom-up or the top-down?
