Thread: Kyle Cease

    Re: Kyle Cease

I don't care either way about this class. I just watched the video and enjoyed Alonzo Boden being intense in front of the stupid surf board themed new comedy club in town. Did Alonzo mention how hard it is as a comedian, like Jen Kirkman who was lied into auditioning for LCS and during the set up to her first joke, a guy named Alonzo banged his fist violently on a table and yelled, "GET. OFF. THE. STAGE."
I'm so glad he's come full circle into now caring about comedians! I guess Alonzo just dons whatever character people who pay him tell him to. "Be like Simon Cowell" "Okay, now be like Tony Robbins."

I listened to Jimmy Dore's interview with him and he sounds like my brother - who is a small-business coach. He uses the same buzz-words and cadence.

Jen - that's amazing. I had a feeling that Alonzo character was a bit slimy.

Ha, well said, Jen. I was wondering what it was they were goin' for with that hideous back drop shit.

Jesus Christ, this dude is about two years away from taking this "Comedy Bootcamp" into an underground bunker. Three years away from telling his followers to cut their nuts off and kill themselves in order to ascend to Comedy Heaven.

    Once again, Kyle Cease accuses Dane Cook of having no jokes;

Say what you want about Dane Cook. But he showed us that you can go from zero to Madison Square Garden with nothing but open-minded ideas.

    Re: Kyle Cease

I'm conflicted. I think he is wrong/misguided/making hard cash money off this but I also don't want to throw the baby out with the bath water. There are some good forms of positive reflection and inspiration and he is right that it takes extreme/"crazy" beliefs to achieve great/rare things. He's also right that people choose to be unecessarily negative or self defeatist more often than positive. Also (these are my words now) I'd say most people will never achieve the great things they are capable of and choose the safety of being average/common over the risk of standing out or being crazy in their goals. Why can't someone else be saying these things? Someone who is not charging you hundreds to hear it.

The real question is, who is worse off? The bright eyed people paying for those classes and thinking they can be Dane Cook or the dude who sits on his computer and shits on everything and everyone all day and never does anything so bold that he/she could be shit on for it? If you're first instinct is to assume I am talking about YOU (although I have no idea you exist), what does that mean? What is real? I just saw Inception for the second time and damn Chris Nolan made that thing air tight. He explains EVERYTHING I had been skeptical about the first time I watched it.

Two weeks ago Roy Wood Jr. told a joke on LCS about getting tossed out of a Career Day at a grammar school because he told the class only a couple of them were going to make it.

Saved me $3000 and I didn't even have to vote for him.

    Re: Kyle Cease

I listened to Kyle Cease's interview on Jimmy Dore's podcast. Besides saying "amazing" a million times (as pointed out in the intro), he also seems to be a "big fan" of everyone.

I like to think I'm a pretty optimistic, positive person, but my God, there is way too much positivity and "Power of Now" and "The Secret" kind of crap going on there. It's kind of nauseating.

    Then there was this:

"I wonder if Second City had to deal with this when they first started up." (not exact quote)

Way to make yourself seem WAY more important than you are, Mr. Cease.

I tried. I really tried. But I just couldn't handle him talk about these classes and his "way of living".

Much respect to Jimmy Dore, though! A respectful interview, but still got in the tough comments and questions. And was funny.

This is so old, but what bothers me about this whole thing is Kyle Cease. Where the fuck does he get off? He's a polished road comic with a boring act and he's not very respected as far as I can tell... and yet he's teaching this class and acting like he's got it all figured out. He talks about being true to yourself and then does "remember the 80's material". It's just offensive.

    Re: Kyle Cease

As we learned in Comedy and Everything Else Episode 100, Alonzo Boden thinks strokes are funny, so who cares what he thinks? Anyhow I have said all I need to about this bootcamp business. Save that crap for the dysfunctional Accounts/Receivable team with the ex-jock stuck in the 90s and the fat guy who thinks he's funny.

    Re: Kyle Cease

I dunno, I've seen some comics go from unknown to being very popular, and they got that way one way, doing it as much as possible. Not by taking a $3k class and getting your first performance filmed. I recently saw a buddy of mine do his first performance at an open mike and he did great, but he had it planned out. He realizes that even though his first performance was good, he needed to tighten up his act even though he was the funniest comic at that open mic. A stand up class would do nothing to help him with his act, only practice would.

Snake oil works great. I oil my snakes every day and they are happy as a couple of clams.

This class is all about getting you in good with the comedy clubs but I thought we were all trying to get away from them?
