Thread: Maria Bamford Thread

    Maria Bamford Thread

I hope I am wrong and there is a Maria Bamford thread already. If not here we go.

I've always liked her work but I heard the Comedy Death Ray CD for the second time the other day. When she sang her therapy song, I had one of those moments of uncontrollable laughter that ultimately makes me love a comedian.

I bought How To Win and loved that and I just finished Unwanted Thoughts Syndrome. The Baby Jesus track made me laugh uncontrollably twice. That kind of laughter where you laugh so hard you start squinting and you have difficulty seeing the road when you're driving. That delirious laughter that I felt cramming for a psychology final.

I would like to thank Maria-the Queen of Comedy-for, well, for being Maria (and her sister and Alicia Keys, etc.)

    Any other fans?

She's fantastic...bout time she had a thread on here.

I feel like the old AST did have a thread but it might not have made the transition.

I love The Bammer. And when I don't wear makeup I look mentally ill.

Maybe I'm insane in saying this, but I genuinely feel that How to Win was stronger that Unwanted Thoughts. Granted, both CDs are amazing, and I would never say that you shouldn't get both if you don't have them, but there was something about How to Win that was slightly more amazing than Unwanted Thoughts.

    Any thoughts?

This thread was supposed to be here six months ago. Fortunately a Dave Holmes thread filled in until it got here.
What would you like to see at the end of every one of my posts?

I respectfully disagree. Granted I never compared both back to back but I feel like she got more personal (thus funnier) with her new album. Although it is a very slight lead. How to Win is incredible as well.

This woman needs her own podcast yesterday.

I feel like both are really on a pretty even keel of awesome. You can pretty much let one blend into the other without noticing a major shift.

Perhaps not a major shift but I believe that she has matured. That said I would never sacrifice either.

An attribute I can't believe no one has mentioned is her likability. As bizarre as her comedy is, I always feel like I could talk to her after a show (not literally of course; in real life I would be a puddle of sweat and nerves).

    Re: Maria Bamford Thread

I've been loosely following her career for a few years now and I can safely say that she is one of my top favourite comics.

I wanted my brother to watch my Comedians of Comedy DVDs but he would always hesitate because one of the central comics were female and he had it stuck in his head that they weren't funny at all (like a lot of people (really? yes!)). Now, we usually joke around a lot and make references to funny things we've/seen or heard recently and for testing purposes, I borrowed some of Bamford's material (diet coke hump), to which he thought was hilarious but didn't know it came from a female(!). A few hours later while switching around the television (not a friend of mine), Live at the Troubadour was on and it was right when she started. Needless to say, we watched it and now he says that all female comics suck, except for her.

    End scene.

PS: I recently thought of the Baby Jesus bit and burst into hysterics.

Baby Jesus is awesome and so is Maria Bamford.

Her closing bit on unwanted thoughts destroyed me. I needed about five minutes to gather myself after listening to that.

It all hinges on the word "husk."

Does anyone know when her DVD comes out? Has it already without me realizing?

    Re: Maria Bamford Thread

Which DVD? The "Unwanted Thoughts Syndrome" CD came with a DVD of all of the "Maria Bamford Show" episodes. The only other DVD I remember hearing her working on was probably two years ago, and I never heard of it after TimBuktu saw her perform the show the DVD was to be based on.

I was thinking of the "Maria Bamford Show" DVD. For some reason, I thought there was a separate release as well.

Hey Maria Bamford fans. I think you should go look in the San Jose Improv "Show listing" thread NOW.

    Re: Maria Bamford Thread

I heard my wife screaming "The Bammer!" in the other room.

She showed me a couple Target commercials with Maria playing "Maria" and "Maria's sister Sarah". Couldn't find video yet, but Maria calls them out on her website.
