Matt was right. The primary reason that electronic devices aren't allowed during takeoff and landing is that the flight staff may need to impart valuable life-saving information in a very limited amount of time, and that would be slightly more difficult if 200 ipods, playstations and laptops are being used.
As for cellphones, there is no actual 'might interfere with the cockpit' reason at all for not being able to use them (If they can receive DirectTV...). Personally, I hope the use of these is never allowed on planes. Flying is shitty enough without an entire plane load of jackasses screaming into their phones to try and compensate for the engine noise.
