Thread: Paul F. Tompkins Thread

    Re: Paul F. Tompkins Thread

Right, and it's frustrating when it's happening to a guy who's pretty much THE superlative guest (for podcasts, anyway). If I'm not enjoying a podcast that features Paul F. Tompkins then something's wrong, and in this instance it definitely wasn't anything with Paul.

Anyway, just my opinion, and this probably isn't even the right thread for it.
    I'm in.

I'm in complete agreement with you. I was cringing throughout this episode.

Admittedly, I am not a regular listener, but what show has arguably the top comedian in the business on and then spends the majority of the time interrupting and talking about their own shit?

In the first 25 minutes Paul was not asked a single question (you guys can't even plug Freak Wharf in the intro?!), nor encouraged to engage in the conversation. Instead, Jordan and Jesse spent an inordinate amount of time on the topic of axe body spray, which they seemingly believed would be funny simply by referencing. And when Paul did chime in he was constantly and rudely interrupted with unfunny asides. Often the topic was even changed to something else without Paul being able to finish his story.

Normally I would just not listen to something I found unfunny, but in this case the rudeness of the hosts and their utter dropping of the ball compelled me to post.

If it was The Sound Of Young America I would understand complaining about it not being about PFT, but it's Jordan, Jesse, Go! It's their show; It's about them.

Guests are just there to be part of the conversation, and PFT certainly was. It was a great episode. He's the best in the business, no question, but they aren't going to change the show for him.

I normally wouldn't post to fight about it, but the rudeness of complaining about a show for maintaining its normal format is ridiculous.

My mistake. I was unaware that their definition of guest meant someone who is present while they ignore social decorum and fuck around.

I'm used to the give and take of something like The Best Show on WFMU, Comedy Death Ray Radio, Comedy and Everything Else, Stop Podcasting Yourself, and Never Not Funny.

    Never Not Funny.
They had Conan O'Brien on and talked about Jimmy for the first ten minutes!

It's fine if you don't like Jordan and Jesse, but your justification is silly.

We all want as much PFT as possible, but he was hardly silent in this episode. He was treated like one of the group, which means people talk about themselves sometimes. This episode was light, comfortable, and natural.

You're both right? ...No, but you're both entitled to your opinion and you don't have to argue about it.

Except why do you have to love something because it stays what it has been? Why is it rude to say that there is an element of a show you enjoy that you wish they would change?

Conan was on JJGo? I don't really follow them anymore (because of the complaints above)

I think the way that quote was supposed to work above was to reference Never Not Funny and not JJGo. I was confused too.

Jordan, Jesse, Go! isn't an interview show. If you want to hear an interview with Paul, here's my interview with Paul. I reran that on the radio when Freak Wharf came out. I also featured Freak Wharf in my "Best Comedy of 2009" special that runs next week on the radio. There's ten years worth of interviews with comedians on The Sound of Young America. So if that's what you're looking for, have at it.

We both agree that Paul is one of the best comics in the business. I absolutely think Paul is as good as it gets, and we pretty much pressed the limits of absurdity in praising him as such on and off the air. We were extremely happy to have him on the show and I think he was hilarious.

But again: not an interview show.

I loved the PFT JJGo episode. Guys, please do not stop acting like "giddy girls," as said behavior warms my heart.

Jesse, I think you're a fine interviewer, but if you look at the criticisms, mine included, they mainly deal with the fact that you and Jordan consistently interrupted Paul. My comment about you guys not asking him any questions in the first 25 minutes was in the context of including him in the conversation. I understand that JJGo is not the same as The Sound of Young America and was not expecting such.

If the focus of the show is yourselves and not the guests, as bridgetosolace explained, then I understand the need to refocus the attention. What I don't understand is why this had to be done with constant interruption. To have Paul on your show and not engage him in the conversation as much as possible is a wasted opportunity in my opinion.

    Re: Paul F. Tompkins Thread

For Christmas, got and listened to Freak Wharf. Really enjoyed it. Having heard PFT interviewed for a while and explain how Impersonal = early/less personal material, Freak Wharf = middle ground, 3rd album = very personal/new material, it makes me curious about this mysterious 3rd album. I believe it has been recorded. Any release date? AST release? The idea of more PFT material is always welcome.

I'm not sure it has been recorded yet. You might be thinking of the DVD Paul recorded at the Laughing Skull Lounge in Atlanta a couple months back.
    I'm in.

I don't know what he's putting out next/recorded, but what he had been doing a couple months ago is really great. Watch for his John Oliver and Friends appearance it's good. Though I wouldn't call it personal.

His suit that night though... geez Paul if you want to rub your extraordinary wealth in our face... you have succeeded.

Paul did record his 3rd album at Largo in LA.

I believe Paul has said--in his tour of the podcast circuit to promote Freak Wharf--that the album he recorded at Largo is being superseded by the special/DVD he recorded in Atlanta. The special is supposed to air on Comedy Central in the spring, it's called You Should Have Told Me, and as of Paul's most recent public statements about it, he's still seeking a distributor for the DVD itself. The more I think about it, he talks about this with Jimmy and Stef on his most recent Comedy and Everything Else appearance.

Ah, I didn't remember hearing that. I could easily be wrong then.
