Thread: Saturday Night Live

Not as good as last week, but what a great little punk band there at the end (even if the host was posing).

    Also the line from the cold open;
"We now go live to the Tea Party Convention where a woman in a Snoopy t-shirt is going to say something racist."

    Re: Saturday Night Live

Ok, to end the confusion once and for all:

    BURN NOTICE

The title refers to the burn notices issued by intelligence agencies to discredit or announce the dismissal of agents or sources who are considered to have become unreliable. When a spy is burned, they are wiped off the grid, without access to cash or influence. According to the narration during the opening credits, the burned spy has no prior work history, no money; in essence, no identity. The television series is a first-person narrative (including frequent voice-overs providing nuggets of exposition) from the viewpoint of covert-operations agent Michael Westen, played by Jeffrey Donovan.

After fleeing a Nigerian operation blown apart by the sudden and unexplained non-cooperation of his U.S. contact, Westen finds himself in his hometown of Miami, Florida, attended to by his ex-girlfriend, Fiona Glenanne, but abandoned by all his normal intelligence contacts, under continuous surveillance with his personal assets frozen. Extraordinary efforts to reach his U.S. government handler eventually yield only a grudging admission that someone powerful wants him "on ice" in Miami; if he leaves the city he will be hunted down and taken into custody, whereas by staying there he can remain relatively free. Consumed by the desire to find out why he has been burned, and by whom, Westen goes to work as an unlicensed private investigator/spy/soldier of fortune for anyone in town who can pay him any money in order to fund his personal investigation into his own situation as a blacklisted agent.

Question: Is there a way to find out which writers wrote which sketches??? I've come across that info sort of randomly - on the writers' Twitter accounts or mentioned in interviews or podcasts or whatever, but is it listed somewhere?

Obviously not as good as last week (duh) and still way too many clunkers, but the Crisis of Conformity sketch alongside that awesome (and somewhat cathartic) Rahm Emanuel piece were sketches to remember.

I loved, loved, loved the wedding band sketch, particularly the details, which were candy for anyone (like me) who grew up on 80s punk - Fred's bandmates were Lyle (as in Preslar, from Minor Threat), Greg (as in Ginn, from Black Flag) and Steve (probably Albini - he and Fred are good friends), and it took place at the Cadena (as in Dez, early Black Flag vocalist) - Norton (as in Greg, bass player for Hüsker Dü) wedding party. Between this and Garth and Kat (proof that the show could use a little more - as in any - improv), I'm calling Armisen MVP for the week. (Interesting, really - my two favorite bits from this week's show soared not on strength of writing [on paper, they'd barely exist] on sheer, LIVE energy. Let's hope this starts a trend.)

The only thing I thought during the wedding band sketch was, "When did Jenny get a job writing at SNL?"

Did you watch the sketch in 2007?

Let's not forget, the sketch starred Fred Armisen. ARM-isen? You know who else had arms? Negative Approach's vocalist: John Brannon!

This post is candy for anyone (like me) who (grew up on) (sup)erfluous parantheses.()

I liked the punk sketch and I think that between Fred and Dave Grohl there was a sincerity and authenticity to it that took it beyond just "hey, old guys playing loud music, weird!" territory.
What was the best concert you've been to?

-- Probably Sade. It was just so sexy and relaxing.

Are you saying you have evidence that she's matured a great deal since then?

I think he's possibly saying she's been gone from this site for a long time now, and yet you're still apparently thinking about her. Someone have a crush they want to own up to?

A lot of good moments, I didn't think that

Armisen, so all in all good job.

I see what you did there.

She must have more money than I thought, to be able to afford an ad in the middle of a sketch

If she pulls that stunt again the next Governor will be Von Ahole, so help me.

I think you'd have to be delusional to say that this site is more interesting without her presence. It's like going to a school that decided to solve their bullying problem by expelling the kid with the thickest glasses.

Who the hell are we supposed to make fun of and pick on now, RubelT?

It was also trying to use the board as her own blog, posting things and being completely unresponsive. Ultimately she wasn't really here anyway.
