    Re: Comic Books!

After hearing Peter Bragge on WTF podcast i decided to check out his stuff so i ordered the first issue of "Neat Stuff". i tried to get an issue of "Hate" but it was out of stock.

I read breach, if it's good i would check it out for sure. I did vote for the comic like Pixel asked. when i voted it was still in fourth place, hopefully it works out for him.

There's a whole Thingamajig going on where Nick Simmons (Gene's son) made a comic book and it's almost entirely ripped off from Bleach.

I saw that, basically he ripped off Tite Kubo's style and a lot of his panel arrangements. He also swiped from a few other Japanese comics, but Bleach was the most obvious.

Does anyone still read Bleach? I try to, but it's hard to remain interested when it feels like they've spent a year and a half on the last battle.
    I'm in.

I can see an artist ripping from a foreign comic, but Bleach? Really? You think you're going to get away with plagiarizing a property that's got to be in the Top 5 in popularity over here?

    Awesome! Thanks!

If anyone wants, please check out the March competitors at http://www.zudacomics.com/competition/results and feel free to post a comic book nerd's opinion of the comics. My friend's entry is Snipe Hunting (the one with the baseball kid). If any opinions are funny/informative I will forward them along to him for the lolz/knowledge.

I brought up Bleach because Breach reminded me of Bleach. You were talking about Breach.

Yeah, Bleach is a Japanese comic about teenagers who fight monsters. Breach is an American comic about Captain Atom if his life were in a more tragic context.
    I'm in.

    Re: Comic Books!

I just finished reading Epileptic and Blankets and I enjoyed both of them a lot. I also read Ghost World a while ago which is what got me interested in graphic novels. So I've only read those three, but does anyone have any suggestions that would be along those lines? I was kind of reading anything Borders had in its graphic novels section, but the last couple I have looked at ended up not keeping my interest so I thought I'd ask here.

I'm for sure going to check out Breach cuz it looks pretty sweet. As for Bleach, I've never really been into japanese stuff or manga or anything like that. On the other hand i've never really read it so i should check some out before i make a judgement. Anyone have any additional suggestions after Bleach?

You can't really go wrong with anything by Naoki Urasawa. Just be aware, he writes really long, engrossing stories. You can't just pick up issue 1 and be satisfied. Off the top of my head a few Urasawa titles include 20th Century Boys, Monster, and Pluto. His are probably the least silly Japanese comics you can find.

As for individual titles, I like Berserk, Fairy Tail, Gravitation, Oldboy, Yakitate Japan, and Yotsuba&. Everybody likes and has read Azumanga Daioh, Beck, Hikaru no Go, Hajime no Ippo, Inuyasha, Dragon Ball, Rurouni Kenshin. They're manga standards.
    I'm in.

I'd say for non-manga fans, good titles are:

Yotsuba which is one of the few manga's that've made me laugh. It's cute without being cutesy.

Gantz, one of the best action mangas, with a lot of fucked up stuff going on all the time.

Vinland Saga is a very cool historical manga about vikings, really mature you won't see people with tiny drops over their heads to indicate agitation.

Pluto is very cool, sort of like Astroboy meets Blade Runner meets Watchmen.

EDIT: You can read them all at eich tee tee pee colon slash slash one manga dot com

I haven't read any manga in a while, but I'll suggest a couple that I read and stuck in my mind:

    Death Note
    Elfen Lied
Uzumaki (this one is really short, 20 chapters I think, but I loved it)
    Estoy jodida...

Just thought I would announce my upcoming Image Comic book here. It's a six issue miniseries I am writing with art by David Hahn (Bite Club, Red Herring, Spider Man Loves Mary Jane, Fables, Marvel Adventures Fantastic Four.) More details as Comi-Con nears.

In other news, just got done reading Ingognito, and Ex Machina, and they are awesome.

Aaaaaaand this thread is (a big part of) why I love AST. People who love comics and comics.

I have a blog about comic books, specifically black superheroines (from tvs, movies, cartoons) and female comic book characters and cartoons of color.

    Re: Comic Books!

I Kill Giants is a great book. It's sort of along the lines of a depressing more realistic Calvin and Hobbes, if that makes any sense. Joe Kelly is one of the best going right now when it comes to characterization. Even his stuff on Amazing Spider-man has been really good.

I'm mostly reading superhero books these days. Grant Morrison's Batman run is something I look forward to every month. Gail Simone's Secret Six cracks me up. I mostly read DC because the characters are more iconic for me. Plus they tend to be kind of campier/weirder than Marvel, and I like the lo-fi weirdness of comics as a genre.

I'm also reading Blackest Night which has been kind of crazy. It's not as good as Final Crisis, but it's probably on the level of Sinestro War.

On the Marvel side I do try and read anything Hickman or Fraction do.

I also read anything that has the words Warren Elis and Avatar Press on the front.

I'm a fan of the bronze age of comics (around 1971 to 1983/1984)

How can you not love the Green Arrow and Green Lantern in a story that tackles herion abuse!

Me too. I love Jim Starlin's Warlock and Manhunter by Archie Goodwin and Walt Simonson. Not too easy to find these days but worth it.
