Jamiroquai isn't a person.
Their second album is great from top to bottom, no argument, and the third one is pretty damn good too. Everything else is more or less a snooze.
I agree with Tron. There are much more shameful things to be listening to.
Two Princes only being the most egregious and awful example...
"Even gutter hags trump pretty boys." - BabyCakes
This is fun.
1. The Pharcyde - Soul Flower (Remix) Maybe my favorite song by the Pharcyde? "If Magic can admit he has AIDS, fuck it, I got herpes." LINK
2. The Primitives - Crash The first time I heard this song on the radio I called the station to ask who it was. Catchy ditty. "Na na na na na." LINK
3. Stark Reality - Sunday's Song Psych-jazz-funk. Good stuff. Lots of vibraphone. LINK
4. ABBA - Tiger Where art thou, ABBA Box? LINK
5. David Pomeranz - Perfect Strangers Theme I am fucking lame. LINK
6. Three 6 Mafia - Stay Fly When I imitate the chorus of this song, I chop my throat like Biz Markie to simulate the crossfader thing. LINK
7. Os Mutantes - Baby They're Brazilian and I think people say this is one of the weaker songs off of their debut self titled. The album is a wonderful journey through tropacalia and I like this one okay. LINK
8. Jens Lekman - You are the Light First song I heard from this guy. Very cheeky. Initially thought he was kinda They Might Be Giants-ish. The music reminds me a lot of Happatai's Yatta!. LINK
9. Re-Up Gang - One Thing Ugh. Love the Rich Harrison production, and the Clipse tapes won't be the same without Sandman. LINK
10. Notorious B.I.G. - Sky is the Limit Always wondered why Notorious B.I.G. is the one introducing himself to the stage in the third person at the beginning of the song. Also, always reminds me of the pretty awesome Spike Jonze video. LINK
1.) Flight of the Conchords - Something Special For the Ladies
Off of Folk the World. Not my favorite recording of this song, but I'm a FotC completist so it had to be in my library.
2.) Jon Stewart - War 'n' Stuff
Off of an audio rip of Unleavened. I think I grabbed this off of MySpleen a couple of years ago, when everybody first started dumping live sets.
3.) Crystal Method - She's My Pusher
I've actually never listened to this one (off of Vegas). A friend asked me to download the album for her a while back and I never bothered to remove it.
4.) The Pixies - Planet of Sound
Off my favorite Pixies compilation, Death to the Pixies (studio disk). I like the whole album, but for me the fun doesn't really start until Debaser (which is track 5, this is, I think, track 2).
5.) Black Cat Music - The Chain-Snatcher
A friend of mine added this to my iPod when we were both in a serious metal stage. I don't think I've ever actually listened to it (this was the same time I stumbled upon Deltron 3030, which ate up like 2 weeks of my life).
6.) The Pillows - Sad Sad Kiddie
Japanese pop punk bands with impossibly great guitar riffs. If you haven't heard The Pillows then you've been missing out for nearly a decade.
7.) Pete Doherty - sweetbyandby
A couple of years ago Doherty released a huge amount of unsorted laptop recordings of prospective songs. I think this was before he was dropped from Rough Draft. Incredibly rough by anyone's standards, but really interesting if you want to hear what Doherty was up to between the first Babyshambles album (which was mostly Libertines content) and the second Babyshambles album (which had an entirely new producer). This tendency to release songs for free online is part of what I love about Doherty, there are literally gigs upon gigs of Libertines live sessions, b-sides, and EPs online for free.
Anyway, the Libertines were my favorite band, and I like to keep up with the 3 bands the boys have created since the split (though Yeti kind of sucks).
8.) Deltron (aka Del tha Funkee Homosapien) - St. Catherine St.
Deltron 3030 is a fucking awesome album. I got turned on to Del through Gorillaz way back when, but I had no idea how exploratory he was with his hip hop.
9.) The Sklar Brothers - Dueling Dices
Awesome way to end an album.
10.) PENPALS - Love Song
Another Japanese pop punk band that I discovered a decade ago. Love Song is a weird song, it's up-tempo and ridiculously meta (which might be a thing with Japanese bands, I don't know). Not my favorite PENPALS song, I'm pretty sure I snagged this from Napster ages ago while looking for other stuff by them (Tell Me Why is my favorite).
I'm in.
1. I'm so jealous you've gotten a hold of the remixes! I'm really weird about stealing music (maybe being a reformed gigging musician makes me squeemish) and I've stayed spoiler-free on the remixes until I can own them with my greedy little hands.
2. I totally feel you on the "wish I could've experienced it when it first hit the world" tip. I always feel that way watching the original episodes of SNL too...I mean, it doesn't take away from the brilliance of the artist to acknowledge part of what burned them into the collective consciousness was the fact that things were totally wide open back in the day. You could totally blow peoples fucking minds up with backwards guitar parts...rightfully so!
I'm glad to see the 3 6 Mafia, Deltron, Helmet, and indy bands I've never heard of
Also I like people living the comedy in
OK here goes whats on my desktop right now
The Misfits- I Tuned Into a Martian
I have a Misfits tattoo, next
Paul Stanley-Track 23 of Let me get this off my chest?
Just Paul yeah yeah yeahing, I've laughed harder at this CD then any Judd Apatow movie
NNF Episode 501- Scott Aukerman
Its in the music library people, the blue jean episode
???- Can Love You
Shitty music not labeled
Faith No More- King For a Day
This song makes me think of skateboarding in Florida and thinking I was one of 5 people who was lucky enough to have bought this album
Royksopp- What else is There? Jacques Lu Cont Remix
Great song, not my favorite version
ACDC- You Shook Me All Night Long (Live)
This was sex education in the 80's that you learned on the school bus in Michigan
Kidz In The Hall- The In Crowd
I like that one song, this isnt it
DJ Douggpound-End of CD
The end of DJ Douggpound's CD
Genghis Tron- Arms
This is pretty much what my mind sounds like on any given day, this probably one of my favorite bands I've discovered in the last few years, the most fitting name for a band's sound since the Dave Clark 5
Air - Sing Sang Sung
Turin Brakes - Feeling Oblivion
Erlend Oye - Sheltered Life (Soviet - Shelton Connecticut)
Interpol - NYC
Rodrigo y Gabriela - Tamacun
Seals and Crofts - Summer Breeze
Buena Vista Social Club - Dos gardenias
Adam Green - Gemstones
Charlotte Gainsbourg - 5:55
Cocteau Twins - Pearly-Dewdrops' Drops
"Even gutter hags trump pretty boys." - BabyCakes
1. Nas - Life is What You Make It
This is off probably my least favorite Nas album. The beat sounds like the music from one of the desert levels in Super Mario Brothers 3. Oh, here comes DMX! I don't really know this song that well.
2. T.I. - You Know Who
I love T.I.'s music regardless of his Scharpling Hate Pit placement. "King" is a great album.
3. Devin the Dude - Some Of 'Em
Devin is great. Not much more to say there. This one's got Nas and Xzibit, too. Maybe we'll get some non-rap at some point.
4. Cat Stevens - Life
I really don't know this at all. I just got a bunch of Cat Stevens from my friend and haven't had a chance to give it a listen yet. This seems pleasant enough, I guess.
5. Clipse - Hello New World
Nobody rhymes about crack sales like Clipse. This album is great and this is one of my favorites on there.
6. Wu-Tang Clan - Back in the Game
Well, Wu-Tang are my absolute favorites, but this is off their worst album, "Iron Flag". Not the best. I swear I have more than just hip-hop on here.
7. Goodie Mob - Free
But apparently not much. This is the intro track to "Soul Food" which is an awesome album. Not much to this one though, what with it being an intro track and all.
8. The Shins - Black Wave
There's a little change of pace. Unfortunately I don't know this that well. There is a pattern forming here. I like it though.
9. Tim and Eric - I Sit Down When I Pee
I wasn't including comedy but this is a song so I'm counting it. These guys are great at writing ridiculous songs that get stuck in your head all day. See: "Petite Feet"
10. Inspectah Deck - Femme Fatale
The most underrated member of the Wu with a song from an underrated album. Nowadays, occasionally Deck will sound like he just smoked an entire carton of cigarettes at once. But only sometimes. It's really weird.
Spread - Outkast, Speakerboxxx/The Love Below
"Don't want to come on too strong, but I'll play in you all day long. Just spread, spread for me."
Classic Outkast. It's very stylish and also very sexual to the point of offending. Oh Yeeeaaaaahhhh... It also has a nice light piano and horn(y?) section solo.
Incetardis - At the Drive-In, This Station is Non-Operational
"Heart sowed a trick - or - treat overture with this promiscuous livestock. Every day is November first in this Sodom and Gomorrah."
A band that's the precursor to The Mars Volta. Not much to say other than they've got an aggressive punk style with really interesting surreal lyrics.
In a Lonely Place - New Order, Substance
"The body that kills and hides matches an awful delight; warm like a dog `round your feet."
A very moody song from a really moody band. Very Eighties. Not my favorite of theirs, but still a good album.
Buffalo Bill - Icy Demons, Miami Ice
A synth-crazy instrumental piece that is both goofy and a little scary at the same time. The band is mostly electronic, but in more of a campy/eighties way. Like Devo with acid or something.
Hope You're Feeling Better - Santana, Greatest Hits
"And I hope you’re feelin’ better. Yes I hope you’re feelin’ good. Yes I hope you’re feelin’ better"
Old school Santana. It's a nice mix of soulful classic rock and uhhh bad-assitude?
Grey - Whirlwind Heat, Do Rabbits Wonder?
"Good evening I unzipped my skin. Thankfully unscrewed my head; exactly as I always do when I prepare myself for bed."
I honestly haven't really listened to this album. I got it from a friend. It's like the white stripes rhythmically (maybe with a bit more punk) and lyrically it's just crazy. It's good though.
Chilly Winds Don't Blow (Live, 1964 New York) - Nina Simone, Four Women
"Chilly winds don't blow along my shore, oh baby, where the chilly winds, the chilly winds don't blow."
I love Nina Simone. Although this isn't my favorite of hers, it's still a solid piece of business. Sexy business that is.
Theme of Laura - Akira Yamaoka, Silent Hill 2 Original Soundtrack
I love this game and one of the reasons is the incredible soundtrack. Also the way it scares me shitless every time I play it. This track in particular is a little more pop and conventional sounding, but there are some really great tracks on this album.
Evil Urges - My Morning Jacket, Evil Urges
"Evil urges baby they be - part of the human way. It ain't evil baby, if it ain't hurting anybody."
My favorite My Morning Jacket album. They've got a little bit of everything from 70's style country to 50's throwback rock style tracks. This track is a little bit of prince mixed with classic southern rock.
Real Gone Daddy - Jim Flaherty's Caravan, Rockin' Bones: 1950s Punk & Rockabilly
"Well, along comes a daddy in another yellow Caddy and he's headin' right straight at me. Well, I'm stubborn and tough, so I'm callin' his bluff, but he's comin' at a terrible rate."
I love Rockabilly. I especially love how dark the lyrics of the songs usually are and yet they manage to stay so danceable. Nothing like rocking out to someone talking about their death at the hands of reckless driving.
I can't resist this kind of thing. Plus it does a very good job at helping me procrastinate writing another thing, so let's go! I have similar iPod tastes to a lot of you...
Street Talkin' -Slick Rick feat. Outkast
This song is really light, bouncy and perfectly showcases Slick Rick's 'deal'. I love it...there's a certain bunch of Outkast collaborations and guest spots that just elevate them...Skew It On The Bar B is great, and Andre 3000 on Devin's What A Job is so great. This is an all star song!
'To The X-Treme' Devin The Dude
This is from my favorite Devin record, and is a typically mellow song that outlines DtD's crippling weed habit and love of 'steady getting blowed', and how it's often mistaken for being addicted to the harder stuff.
'I'll Call Before I Come' Outkast
Decent song I guess but one of the Outkast songs that annoys me. Too clear of a double meaning!! F.U!
'The Loner' Neil Young
My first non Southern rap song is an earlier, incredible Neil Young song. No idea what this loner character is like but my gut feeling tells me he looks a little bit like all of us!?
'Call Me The Breeze' Lynyrd Skynyrd
I love Lynyrd Skynyrd, just for their massive guitar sound. How ironic that they are following Neil Young. If only they were alive to be angry at my iPod, but the one guy who is alive is too busy denying weird child molesting charges to worry about what song follows what on some schmuck's music device. (I know there's another alive guy in the band, don't worry)
'Fighting My Way Back' Thin Lizzy
What is my iPod doing? Is it trying to tell me that I listen to too much well known '70s guitar rock? Anyway, Thin Lizzy are great. This is one of their best. Charles, the owner of My Mind's Eye, a great Cleveland record store, has a postcard from Phil Lynott's mother, and that impresses me.
'California Uber Alles' Dead Kennedys
One of the first punk songs I really loved, and a history lesson too! Let's all stop Jerry Brown! Oh no, the suede denim secret police are here-run!
'Queens Gambit' GZA & DJ Muggs
I never picked up the Grand Masters GZA/Muggs album, but I heard this song was the best so I checked it out, and it indeed is good. GZA's lyrics are detailed and involving, and the production is classic. Muggs is a good producer, although I interviewed him once and discovered he had less to do with the production of the first Cypress Hill record than I had hoped. GZA does football references throughout the song, it's cool. Notable lyric: They spread eagles like wide receivers/as I had them in the end zone/they became true believers...
'Fantastic 4' Cam'ron, Big Pun, Nore & Canibus
Posse cut - in some ways, a poor man's Banned From TV, set over a pretty standard loop. Big Pun stands out, Nore sounds silly but fun('stick a broom in your butt, say 'go 'head boo' is the kind of line that makes you question musicians being paid), Cam'ron is solid, and Canibus is at his best, which isn't saying much. This is from DJ Clue's The Professional album/mixtape.
'We Who Wait' Jay Reatard
Damn, I didn't know this was an Adverts cover! I feel like an idiot for missing that. Anyway, sound-wise this falls perfectly in line with the rest of Blood Visions; it's fast, dark and foreboding. This is a good album. I should really check out the Adverts.
Music!
I'm in the process of breaking in a new iPod so I've only got about 400 songs on there now.
Guided by Voices - I am a Scientist
I like Guided by Voices but I find their catalogue a little daunting due to it's size so I basically just randomly download songs.
Joy Division - No Love Lost
I love this song. It's probably the Joy Division song that sounds the most like the bands that influenced them in the beginning and Ian Curtis' vocals are very Iggy poppesque here.
Volcano Choir - Still
This song is boring as hell and I have to remember to erase it. I guess it's the Bon Iver guy's side project and it reminds me of Fleet Foxes and Grizzly Bear type stuff and both those bands bore the pants off me as well. Not sure why I have it here.
Bobby Bare Jr - Strange Bird
Bobby Bare Jr is the son of renowned country music singer Bobby Bare. He was nominated for a grammy when he was 5 for a song he sang with his father. He's still got a little bit of a country sound but it's rougher than most. This is my favourite Bobby Bare Jr song and sometimes he drifts a little to far into Alt Country by the numbers territory for me.
Sambassadeur - Calvi
I don't know anything about these guys. I think someone burned a disc for me. It's kind of like Stars, poppy New Order, OMD. It's pleasant enough but a little blah.
Luna - Cindy Tastes of Barbecue
Luna and Galaxie 500 are pretty much my favourite bands ever and I think I've liked everything they've done. This is from their last album Rendezvous and it's not their best but there's still a lot to love. This is a pretty classic Luna track with Dean Wareham's wordplay and guitar work.
The Breeders - Flipside
I'm a sucker for 90s college rock. Superchunk, Pixies, Archers of Loaf, Pavement, Buffalo Tom, etc...are the tits.
Black Lipstick - Throw Some Money At It
I can't remember how I heard of these guys but as soon as I did I went to Soundscapes and placed an order for both of their discs that came out a few years ago. It's appropriate that they came up after my 90s college rock confession since they remind me of Pavement, Yo La Tengo, Velvet Underground. I really like them.
Dinosaur Jr - Freak Scene
Theme developing. It's Dinosaur Jr, what can you say?
Out of Time Man - Mano Negra
This is the only Mano Negra song I like. I prefer the Mick Harvey version of this song but this one is pretty cool too.
What was the best concert you've been to?
-- Probably Sade. It was just so sexy and relaxing.
A+ Thread! What an awesome way to get to know someone. People should do this on first dates.
My #11, the song my iPod shuffled to after #10, was Da Art of Storytellin' Part 1. The one with Slick Rick. Saw Outkast perform it at this place where I "directed traffic" at the amphitheater, but the sloppy bureaucracy involved with assigning work allowed me to simply show up, clock in, drive home for a couple hours, drive back and enter the show for free about 20 minutes into the set. And collect a small paycheck. I would feel guilty but they're on some ticketmaster Bill Graham racket (I still feel a little guilty).
1) Boys Club - "Back to School": great songs by dudes that can barely play their instruments in the best way possible
2) Girls of the Gravitron - "Rainbow": I dunno, these guys are from memphis. decent.
3) Big Star - "Back of a Car (live)":from their new boxset. awesome.
4) 08_Unemployment ?? - Unlabeled mp3. seems pretty cool though.
5) Snake Flower 2 - "Set You Straight": matt melton from this band writes killer songs, he's in bare wires too.
6) Black Flag - "Damaged II": from everything went black sung by dez I think. he's no Ron Reyes
7) The Adicts - "Steamroller": they're fun
8: The Saints - "New Centre of the Universe": one of the best original punk bands from Australia
9) Roky Erickson - "Night of the Vampire": Gotta love Roky.
10) Phil Hundley - "30 Second Affair": on the Red Snerts compilation, Indiana punk put out by Gulcher. cool.
Every song on my iPod is "Do You Know (The Ping Pong Song)" by Enrique Iglesias.
Check that. A friend of mine shat on THEIR dressing room floor in Madrid. For comedy.
If I may channel the ghost of Andy Rooney for a minute ... based on your music, there are two types of people on this list: those to whom I can relate a little bit, and those with whom I have nothing to say, musically. Which is to say, I think six groups is the most I've recognized from anyone's list. I feel so disconnected. And dumb. But I do like reading the lists.
