Thread: This is the new games thread

I am probably in the minority who didn't like bioshock. I wasn't planning on playing the new one at all, but due to the fact that I'm trying to stave off cabin fever, I will probably get it. I would say you should probably play the first one if you care about storyyyyyyyyyyyyyy.

Bioshock 2 is great so far, but I can't imagine that anyone who didn't like the first one would like this one. Its very similiar. In a good way, but not in a way thats going to convert anyone I don't think. Then again, I can't understand people not liking the first one.

I would say play BioShock because it's a great game. Period. But there's no carry-over in terms of character stats or anything like that.

Bioshock 1's story was pretty well told and interestingly thought out.

The end just left a sour taste in my mouth, though. A whole game of twists and turns leads up a 15 second cinematic akin to something at the end of a Dead Or Alive round.

Videogame endings have been historically awful. I can't think of one that was memorable except the dog ending in silent hill 2, and that was a joke.

Most of all decent videogames have dull ending equivalent to the ending of Star Wars: A New Hope. It's about the journey more than the GOD DAMMIT I NEED TO STOP POSTING IN THIS THREAD. I HATE IT AND I HATE ALL OF YOU. ESPECIALLY YOU.

Although there's been hating on Metal Gear Solid, I'm convinced that metal gear solid 3 has the best story of any game I've ever played. I haven't played the first one, and didn't love the second one.

It's almost the opposite of Bioshock in the sense that I don't really remember anything in the beginning and middle, but I found the end really really compelling.

I don't think I've ever gotten chocked up over a different videogame.

I agree with both of these.

I still think Metal Gear Solid 3 has the best final boss battle (fittingly enough with "The Boss") especially after the 5 minute mark when the games theme song is playing in the background. So much better than that stupid Super Mario Bros. ending.

Fantasies Final 7-10 all offer very good and usually very emotional endings. No. 10 might be a Hall of Famer.

    I don't think I ever finished 8 or 9. I got close, though >_>

Am I alone in thinking FF10 is the best of the series? Gameplay (the fact that every team member can be important in every battle, great system of progression that lets each character be special for a while, but eventually lets you customize) AND story (concise, sweet love story that doesn't go on forever)?

I think it's the best refinement of the classic turn based RPG system.

I really liked FFX. I wouldn't complain if it were given the Final Fantasy crown (which would offset all the complaining from people who insist that 16-bit Final Fantasy II on a black-and-white TV is the ultimate series experience).

I loved how in X when a character would finish off the last foe, they would have little finishing move animations, like when Waka would bean someone with his ball, or Old Swordy Man would say, Enough!, rush in and then Bam!

I actually am a fan of XII and of Tactics since the stories center more on political intrigue than the others. Similarly, that is one of the reasons I am a ran of the criminally underrated Suikoden series. But I digress...

Game endings that stand out for me as I write this are the major twist ending from inFamous, Metal Gear Solid 3's previously mentioned ending, and the ending to Assassin's Creed 2.

Ken Cosgrove to star in L.A. Noire:

This is the next game I am highly anticipating, although as it was originally supposed to come out in 05, it's in the back burner at this point.

To me, XII had TOO much political intrigue and not enough reason to care. I remember saying to myself at the mid-end range of the game "Wait a minute, what the hell are they talking about?" I just don't recall them differentiating enough between factions for me to really care. They picked up the more character based drama by the end, though, and I remember liking the final act.

Tactics 2 has a rubbish story, if you haven't played it.

I've played suikden III and V (I heard IV was bad, so I skipped.) Both had their strong points and weak points, and neither managed to keep my attention to the end. III was just horribly paced (even though I really liked the idea of the 3 converging story lines), and V's overarching plot was a bit weak to me. I got to the big twist/reveal at about middle-end and then felt like I had experienced all the game had to offer.

The DS Suikoden game's story is pre-teen anime level quality. Which is a shame, because it's REALLY well made otherwise.

And thanks for reminding me that I have to finish Assassin's Creed 2...

Re: This is the new games thread

Suikoden 2 was definitely the best one (and your right, 4 was pretty lame.) The story was really compelling, and the ending of the game has this really great reward for remembering a key element of the game which I thought was a nice touch. The third one was enjoyable until around the end, then I don't even remember what happened.

Re: This is the new games thread

Story aside, Suikoden III deserves praise for its race of duck warriors.

I don't know if Suikoden is under-rated, it's popularity trailed off with IV and V -- because I heard the games just weren't that good. But the first two are in the RPG nerd pantheon.

Like I said, I kind of forgot all of the elements of the story by the end of XII, but I really liked the battle system and the skill system; I made the little girl my main warrior. I also liked the Han Solo guy and Bunny Lady archer characters a lot.

The worst ending of any game is without a doubt Super Ghouls and Ghosts where after playing one of the most fucking difficult games ever, you are forced to do it all over again if you don't carry along this one item that they give you no indication of being important. Fuck I hate that game.

  20. #2560

Re: This is the new games thread

That's one of my favorite games!

And actually, you CAN'T get that item the first time you go through, only the second, MORE DIFFICULT time. HA

To be fair, if I had played that game before emulators/save states, yeah, I would have killed somebody.
