Thread: This is the new games thread

Re: This is the new games thread

NeuroSky's Mindset headset was on display at the Tokyo Game Show last week, and gamers are excited about the possibilities. The controller looks like a regular pair of headphones, for the exception of a single electrode that makes contact with the user's forehead to monitor his brainwaves. The headset gauges the player's level of concentration and relaxation, then moves the on-screen character accordingly within the game.

My game no work. Head part too small for brain.

Here's a nearly 16-minute video retrospective on the Fallout series.

Little Big Planet is great! I haven't touched the creator tools yet, I've just been playing the "story" mode to unlock as many stickers, decorations, tools & gadgets as I can. You have to tackle the first three levels to unlock the Create features but the game itself is so much good old fashioned platforming fun, I'd rather keep going to check out what the developers have made.

That's another thing about playing through the game, you get to see all the different sorts of things you can build (everything you see, you can concievably make yourself). At times, the game has veered from jump and run (there are only two buttons to playing the game, jump and grab), and has you doing things like flying with a jetpack to pick up bombs and fly them through a tunnel to blow up a wall or hopping on a skateboard and speeding down a hill, going so fast sometimes your little dude will fly off the thing in hilarious fashion.

Aside from the creative, visual levels; playing two (or up to four) at the same time on the screen is more fun than it should be. You can help eachother (some bonuses require two people to get) or knock eachother around (you can hit the other person or grab onto them as they are hanging on to something). If one of you goes outside of the frame, you have five seconds to get back on screen or else you will show up at the next checkpoint when the other person gets to one. The camera is really intuitive and helps as much as possible to keep people together. It works as good as it can for a platform game that has all players on the screen at once.

It really is ridiculous fun. It honestly can't be guaged by other titles, there's just nothing like it. The best way to sum up the game so far is charming. Just charming. It really does go out of its way to present a fun and engaging experience that is as much fun to play as it is to marvel at the creativity displayed in each level.

And while you're playing the game, you can change your character's look, grab decorations off the level, or start placing stickers all over the place whenever you want. Once I unlocked the Eyetoy sticker, I was sticking my face all over everything. And I took a picture of my beer and painted the wall with Bud Light. I haven't even touched the Create yet, but I can tell it will be an infinite amount of choices. The first levels I want to design include Back to the Future (with a rideable DeLorean) and a stand-up level using comedian's faces in the style of Monty Python animation (I can see having to jump across a Patton mouth opening and closing for instance) because you can add in, not only custom pictures but audio as well. I could set up cue points for audio to kick in at a certain point as a Megalo-Tompkins tries to stomp on you, or even have CKs set start as you come across a bridge gaurded by a Louis CK troll. The possibilities...

EDIT: A guy built a fucking working calculator in LBP using the tools they give you. www.youtube.com/watch?v=zirgybhoaou

EDIT II: This website made 8-bit game levels for Mega Man, Zelda, Space Invaders, Donkey Kong with alot of time and patience. With enough free time, you can make this game into anything you want.

Holy crap, why did I think I'd like Fallout 3? I get why people who like these types of games would be total boner city for it, but it's BORING to me. The graphics are shit, it's really slow, and it requires you to spend tons of time talking to people in communication trees.

I take it back, I don't get why people like these types of games. If I wanted to have a never-ending laundry list of chores to do I'd listen to my old lady when she talked.*

Seriously, they just keep giving you busy work. When did that qualify as fun? Go talk to this guy who will tell you to talk to this guy, who will tell you to talk to this guy, who will tell you to do something, so that you can do something else, and then go talk to 4 more guys. It's like being someone's personal assistant, accept the graphics are bad and the controls are shitty.

In full disclosure, I played through Mass Effect twice, because it was fun... so I don't hate RPG's on principle... but the amount of mundane shit you have to do in this game made me quit less than two hours in.

I got Fallout today and I am really enjoying it. But it is very hard, every heath pack, coin, and ammunition must be hoarded.

Is it hard, or is it busy work? To me, it felt like I was in the tenth grade and my math teacher kept piling on homework because he was bored and wanted me to share in his misery.

Tim, you've described my problem with every RPG ever. To be fair, I haven't purchased or played an RPG since Phantasy Star II on Genesis.

I'm on the fallout 3 looks boring bandwagon... I bought Elder Scrolls IV based off of the hype and I never finished it and I will probably never play it again unless I become bedridden.

Far Cry 2 is growing on me... the online stuff needs a patch, but it has potential to be big. Anyone playing some Far Cry 2?

Anyone else wish they could play RTS games (Red Alert 3) without their assholes tightening? I can't play them anymore because of that.

Is that homophobia towards RTS games?

Fallout 3 is nice. The worst thing I can say so far is that without the assisted targeting system it would be Oblivion with guns, and I HATED using bows and arrows in Oblivion. They do a good enough job with the world that I refuse to drink dirty water or eat shitty weird food yet. That makes things difficult.

Yeah, I play as a chick, so what?

Not an RPG fan. I'd never heard of Fallout until the Fallout 3 trailer came on the PSN and I loved it (it was the one with the 50s live action opening). It's humor, look, and gameplay looked badass. I would have picked it up if it weren't for LBP, MotorStorm (and soon Resistance 2) coming out. I'm glad I didn't beause I had no idea it was an RPG until I read a couple reviews yesterday. It may be a phenemonal game (its been getting great write-ups), but I find RPGs one of the most boring things on the planet. I'll admit when a game is cool, and there are some that are supposed to be amazing, I just can't stand playing them. I was looking forward to playing it too, but I no likey role playing.

    Oblivion with guns? Awesome.

The only things I didn't like about Oblivion were occasional gameplay glitches and a world of fantasy names to memorize (never tell me an elf's name and expect me to remember it). Fallout 3 sounds right up my alley. Now, if only I had some free time...

The ranged weapon system in Oblivion made me want to shit out a rat sideways is all. I hated bows and it always seemed easier to just fireball someone to death or run up and crank on them with a sledgehammer. Fallout 3 is much better suited.

That made me laugh too. It didn't help that they had maybe six voice actors on the whole game aside from the two or three big stars. So not only was it hard to tell everyone apart by name and look but everyone sounded the same.
