Thread: This is the new games thread

Re: This is the new games thread

Is anyone else surprised that, after years of persistent well-denied rumors, there really is going to be a Star Wars MMO designed by BioWare?

If you're not surprised, or you are bored by this topic, I am not interested in your opinion. This is merely a gateway question into "what races do you think will be playable" and "how big is your boner".

Anyone want to buy Dead Space for the PS3?

I am serious. I play games to challenge my reflexes and intellect, not to give myself a stress test. 45 bucks.

I don't play MMOs but this does seem interesting. I really liked the way KOTOR played. I don't know - I can't get myself to keep playing through KOTOR 2 even though I really like it, but I think with enough cool stuff I may dip my toe in again (WoW had me for a couple of months).

I love Dead Space, but it's certainly not relaxing in any way. I won't play it if I'm too stressed out from work, because then I can't go to sleep. Not because it's scary, but because I feel like I'll have a panic attack. My girlfriend can't even be in the apartment when I play.

So it's not scary so much as it is intense? It's the possibility of things jumping out at you rather than things actually jumping out at you?

Re: This is the new games thread

It's both. I am really not very far in the game but something about surprise-party zombie aliens just gets to me too much.

Well, it's that, and then 8 horrible things come screaming and running at you in the dark, and you're trying to shoot their legs off but they jump on your face and rip your head off while you're gasping for air.

    So, more intense than scary.

I am into BioWare and its titles the way people used to be into Motown and its singles. But I haven't been following the online game just because of Fallout 3, and then I will get Fable II and Resistance 2.

I played Final Fantasy XI for more than a year, but I can't play all the time, so I would have trouble getting into parties when I was about level 30. I have read that WoW has done a lot to ease that issue, and help with leveling if you have been away from the game for a time. I hope the Star Wars game does the same.

As far as races and characters are concerned, anyone who knows me at all knows that I will be playing as a sexy black-lady human rogue/smuggler type. Like in real life.

I have sunk a lot of time into City of Heroes and World of Warcraft. I sunk the time and then bailed on both eventually. I would just get too busy with real life for those missions that would last 4-5 hours. I suspect that would remain a real issue.

However, Bioware is now more tapped into the original spirit of Star Wars than George Lucas (thank goodness for Bioware and Genndy Tartakovsky, and curse you George) and part of me is still a 5 year old who wants to dwell in that universe. Combine that with the fact that Bioware had previously broken up with LucasArts and this seemed a distant possibility...

I mean I have a billion reasons to not play this game (child, wife, career, great depression 2) but you can't not salivate at this concept and be me.

The ultimate sandbox game is life. In it, you buy a computer and use it to design your own video game, which you then play. Enjoy!

For those who are into this sort of thing*, there's an article about Epic Games (Gears of War) in the New Yorker this week.

You can do that in Second Life, too.

Second Life makes flying a customizable person around cities boring. It takes a real shitty premise to screw that one up.

At least in the Sims people could piss themselves and catch on fire.

    Amen to that.

Second Life is great if you've ever sat around thinking, "Man, if I could fly, think of how much more advertising I could see!!"

Oh, I'm sorry about my loud nerd-snickering. I was just reading about how some people on the Web think that Seth Rogen's sweatshirt for the Monroeville Zombies in Zack and Miri is for a fictional hockey team. And I have never even played Urban Dead!*

Great Scott! Someone already made a Back to the Future level in LBP. They beat me to the punch and with a pretty sweet looking DeLorean too. The level could be more detailed but as far as going through the beats of the first movie, it was a decent attempt. The car slowly rolling out of doc's white van with smoke coming out was an especially nice touch. The level designer gave away the car as a prize for playing, now I can use it myself if I don't feel like building one.

I also got to play people's versions of Indy (good-first scene recreated from the temple to the plane at the river), Batman (cool Batmobile in one), Jurassic Park (cool Rex) and Titanic.

Obama and Palin are to be DLC game characters for the war sandbox title Mercenaries 2. I have to admit the accompanying trailer of the footage looks interesting. Watching Obama climb atop a tank, fight with a guy coming out, wrestle a grenade from him, kick him down the hole and toss in the explosive... is really cool to see but kind of bizarre. Also surreal to witness, is Palin jumping into a helicopter and twisting the pilot's neck to fly it on her own. Oh, and she bazookas tanks too. It's what she does.

    They are surprisingly well rendered!
