So the new Fight Night is pretty good once you get used to the controls. It's a better simulation of actual boxing than the last one... i.e. you can't throw 30 haymakers at someone's head and not expect counter punching.

i HATE the new fight night. it took out all the joy of delivering haymakers to the opponent's head without expecting a counter punch, replacing it with a punch control system that doesn't make sense to my hands.

and it's like they went a step down in graphics and realistic body movements. throwing 70 billion jabs to my opponent's head in 5 seconds should probably phase him a little, right?

Re: This is the new games thread

That is terrible news. I thought that Round 3 was less fun than Round 2 because you couldn't go haymaker crazy. I know it's not as realistic, but that's not why I play video games.

Yeah, it's more of a strategic boxing game now. A lot of fights go the distance. I've gotten a lot better at the controls, it was hard though because I played the shit out of FN3. They actually make sense when you get used to them... that being said, I don't know why they changed them in the first place.

I like the other changes though, the old game I usually either knocked someone out or caused so much bleeding the fights were over in 3 rounds.... now I feel like I actually have to think about what I'm doing instead of throwing punches like a lunatic.

I do think the counter thing is overpowered though... they grossly over-valued those hits over equally good shots not off of counters.

i'm not a fan of realistic sports games so much but it seems like it makes sense that they would make a game like fight night be more realistic and less punchout-y

Point Lookout is pretty sweet. The main questline is neat but very short. Still there's lots of sidequests to do.

One big bummer is the two main characters of the main questline are genius ideas that are highly underutilized. They have crazy complicated backstories and you barely hear any of it. They tell you it's "none of your business" or that you "couldn't begin to understand" when clearly Bethesda "couldn't budget enough for a writer and voice actor to make it interesting". Lame. Come on video game industry, stop pussying out on writing.

That said, both characters are neat surprises and some of my favorites in the world of Fallout.

I don't get why videogame writing is still so terrible. It can't cost that much to hire someone to write competent dialogue that doesn't make me feel ashamed for playing a game.

I'm glad it's more of a simulation game now. I really want to get my hands on it because a few friends of mine and I were huge fans of the older one and I have a feeling we'll all like the changes.

It is dependent on the series. Some games are really well written and presented. Take the Uncharted series or Metal Gear series of games. I think part of the issue is that while video gaming has developed a strong reputation as a business, at lot of people are hesitant to think of it as a reputable story telling medium outside of those who already play games.

Is anyone else playing The Bigs 2? I just finished playing three hours of homerun pinball before I realized that I was starving.

Somewhere I thought I'd read this was coming to the DS, too, but that doesn't appear to be the case. I wish. Looks fun.

Battlefield 1943 is out now on Live and the Playstation Store.

Since I am leaving for a road trip to San Diego this afternoon, I am probably only going to download the demo in a bit and see what its like. Tymbuktu, I've got you on my friends list but I'm always watching Netflix when you are on...ArchStanton added me last night so when I get back I expect we will all have an XBox Live orgy with Battlefield 1943.

He spends a lot of time in Lucas Simm's house. If you're doing "The Power of the Atom" and Lucas is dead (which I assume is why you are looking for him), you can make that your active quest and a waypoint should lead right to him.

Re: This is the new games thread

I have a friend at Midway Games here in Chicago who I have harassed multiple times for writing work. He's told me that most game companies are full of directors, programmers, and animators who fancy themselves writers at heart aching for a chance to shine, and since they will do it on the salary they're already being paid it's win-win for the game designers.

I know the occasional role playing game will hire a huge team of writers and hole them up in Canada or Austin or whatever, but that seems to only be in the cases of games like World of Warcraft, Fallout 3, Mass Effect, etc. In the case of Point Lookout, I remember hearing Oblivion was largely written by programmers, and even if the main Fallout 3 dialogue was written by a writing team I'm guessing DLC is on a real time crunch of development, so they may have just asked Bethesda programmers to do as much of it themselves as possible and hence the rushed "we won't tell you the whole story" garbage.

The On the Page podcast also had a great episode recently about paid video game writing. They mention that it pays worse than pretty much anything. Which is a bummer because it seems like it would be an amazingly fun job for a gamer who also writes professionally.

When I think about all of the above and combine it with my knowledge that the gaming industry is stuffed with money, sometimes grossing more than Hollywood for a time, I think about how the industry might still just be in early stages. But then I think about how fucked the writers were during the WGA strike and my hopes fall. Film and TV barely gives a shit about writing, and it is many times older than the gaming industry.

I got into a third interview for a writing job on the Marvel/Cryptic MMO that became Champions Online. The process of writing test synopsizes and dialogue was a really fun. There are obviously cool exceptions like that floating around but they seem incredibly competitive for such low pay.

If anyone read all of that, thank you. You earned 2 XP.

There don't seem to be enough Battlefield 1943 servers. My friend and I got in one game, but after that we spent about 30 minutes looking for a match and then gave up.

Re: This is the new games thread

God I fucking hate EA. Everytime they release a game, their servers can't handle the load. 1943 has a crawl that says "we're adding more servers, bear with us"....

This happens every single time a game is released. They wait to see and then add more instead of assuming people want to play their game. I don't get how they can't get this right once.
