Lots of lag. Just where are our membership fees going?
I'll chime in here: yeah, the chat has been really laggy the last few weeks. Also there have been several days where I can't access the site at all for hours at a time. Are they related? I don't know, I'm not in charge of this thing.
I don't know too much about it, but I do know there have been problems with the host lately and isoS is looking into it and exploring other options as well.
I'm sure you guys know, but the portal disappeared, and aspecialthing.com goes to a blank page. Have to go into an actual forum to get here.
So my University's server apparently flagged this website and blocked me from getting on it on any computer on campus, including the one in my apartment. They finally fixed it. It happened right around the time the website went down for that day a couple weeks ago, so I'm wondering if it had anything to do with that. But anyway, that was the worst couple weeks of my life, I had to get on the site with my cellphone. Just wanted to give you guys a heads up about that.

FYI: we have (finally) moved to a new host, so things should be faster, more reliable and safer (no more flags I hope) here at AST. Big ups to Jouster for making it happen this weekend -- real Internet hero!
I'm glad you posted something on this isoS--because I was freaking out by the vBulletin "Moving!" message that I kept getting. (Eventually had to type in the URL, because every link on the AST page that I'd had open since before the move would return the same result.)
Makes sense now...but there might be a few folks, like I was, who may still be trapped in a "Moving!" limbo.
everything is fast again! this is great!

Yeah - much speedier. Now let's see if the board will keep me logged in for a change.

I love talking about comedy, dissecting comedy, digging into the theory and practice of comedy. AST is a great place to do that as it is filled with comedy nerds and comedy performers.
...but I'm getting a very strong sense that the recent influx of beginning comics who are looking for ANY sort of guidance in a field that so rarely offers any is starting to compromise the value of the site to others who are not so interested in the nuts and bolts of basic comedy performance. This sense is starting to be noted in signatures of AST participants, in discussions about "how AST used to be cool, but now it's filled with noobs" that I've had with people who really SHOULD be enjoying the AST experience.
I feel like I've contributed to this problem by responding to certain threads and perpetuating these discussions in my signature long-winded/thorough way...and I'd really hate to lose what's been awesome about AST...which is a definite sense of community and common interest.
There really isn't a message board designed for beginning comedians where they can be mentored and given guidance--so, there's nowhere to send our very enthusiastic if entirely self-interested new participants.
Perhaps, as a compromise, a new section could be created so that all threads for performing comedy are all grouped somewhere other than in the AST Comedy section, where they seem to be beginning to annoy many long-time AST participants?
It's an idea, anyway.
pg--Captain Breakfast has convinced me to take a two month break from responding to the "Open mic experiences" thread. I do enjoy mentoring inexperienced comics, but if it would make things better here, I'm willing to stop participating in any of those threads...but perhaps simply getting them out of everyone's way would be an effective approach to the situation?--seattle

Far be it from me to pipe in too much since I probably fall into the territory of those afformentioned "noobs" but pg might be on to something. I think it is a tricky balance though since I know I didn't join this community to simply ask questions about comedy. I simply consider it a benefit of being part of a community which has a shared interest. But pg is still right, and perhaps I have been caught up in the fervor that has enveloped the Open mic experiences thread and actively contributed to it with my Theft thread which was posted simply because I need to vent some steam. For that, I apologize.
That said, I feel we are all a community here but if I hadn't looked at this thread, I wouldn't have really caught on that some individuals may have found the comedy talk excessive. This is not something that can really be addressed site wise except for me suggest that the old timers not feel any hesitance in letting the newer people know about their concerns. Otherwise, the community gets a bit split.
I'm probably talking out of my ass though. But I don't see any harm in pg's suggestion. That or we just tone it down a bit.
This only affects people who are OCD enough to have to read EVERY post in EVERY thread*. This isn't a movie or a TV show, it's a Choose your own Adventure book.

In case anyone didn't notice, we took your suggestion.
