I'm not sure if it was supposed to come off as a parable of any sort. If so, I think it would have tried to be even more anvilicious with the comparisons they were making. I can see what your getting at but I'm not sold on that line of thought. I would require most television writers today be capable of something resembling complexity and I only think a few shows have the staff required for that.
