Will the 11th Amendment Comedy Show be returning when school starts back up?
Will the 11th Amendment Comedy Show be returning when school starts back up?
Loserage, that is a very good question! We are almost 95% sure that it will be back in Sept again on a Tuesday. We're going to try and promote it even harder to get more of the college crowd. It will still be hosted by Jordan and now Adult Swim intern Adam Welker! I'll post more info when I get it.
(Loserage, I am still expecting you to come hang out or perform with us one night. Don't think I forgot!)
Good stuff. Congrats on the Adult Swim internship. I'm expecting myself to come hang out AND perform with you Ames-folk as soon as possible. If you're ever down in Des Moines for either the House of Bricks or People's open mics, I've been attending those regularly.
That means you've seen Jordan Turler! Say hi to him, he's a good guy and co-host
Anybody know of a good website that collects comedians' tour schedules? I'm looking for a way to find comedians that are touring near the state, so that I can contact them about potentially performing here. Short of consistently checking individual comedians' MySpace pages and websites, it seems like there should be some kind of searchable listing that I don't know about... or there should be one.
Depending on the size, pollstar.com does have some comedy acts but there is nothing that sticks out to me.
It doesn't seem as though there is one; although, Punchline Magazine is apparently working on creating just this kind of database.
Anybody else going to be at Comedy at the Bricks this upcoming Tuesday night?
Comedy at the Bricks again tomorrow night at 8 - you there?
I'm still awaiting the return of the 11th ACS... soon?
Any other college area open mics? Supposedly, "No Shame" theater has one going every other Friday up in Waterloo. I'd like to find one in Iowa City too.
The Des Moines open mics are becoming increasingly frustrating as I can only ask my friends to come see my jokes so many times before they're over it; meanwhile, nobody else seems to bring anybody out. It'd be nice to tell jokes to a group of people who aren't the other area comedians...
11ACS is currently looking at a new home in which we will have an actual stage and better lights and also we'll be able to put it on local ISUtv. I can admit the Des Moines open mics will always just be the same people with not many chances to do special sets either. The M-Shop in Ames often holds an open mic that have different people every week but comedy is kinda rough to do there. As soon as I get any word on 11ACS I'll post it here and have you come up to preform for a whole new group of people along with a much longer set.
Good stuff for 11ACS getting bigger/better w/ ISUtv. If you guys need any help cleaning up the space or whatever, let me know - I'd be glad to pitch in.
Did you check out DERRICK comedy live at the M-Shop last night, by chance? I couldn't afford the half tank of gas to make it up last night, but will be up there Friday night to see their movie "Mystery Team" at the Cinemark 12. A member of the comedy troupe is supposed to be at the evening screenings both Friday and Saturday if you get a chance to see it.
Update on the Open Mics in the Des Moines area for anybody looking in for such info.
1st, 3rd, and 5th Tuesday of every month
"Underground Comedy"
House of Bricks
525 E. Grand Ave
Des Moines, IA 50309
FREE, sign-up at 7:30pm, comics from 8:00-9:30pm
sets ranging from 5-8 minutes
Both open mics are mostly attended by 8-14 other local comedians, but on a couple occasions, the $1 Domestic Bottles special has drawn some people in. The other comedians/crowd seem to be more forgiving; as well as a bit funnier (the material) here (in my opinion).
Every Thursday
"Comedy on Court"
People's on Court
216 Court Ave
Des Moines, IA 50309
FREE, sign-up at 7:45pm, comics from 8:15ish-9:30pm
maximum five minute sets
Weekly open mic, again mostly (almost exclusively) attended by other local comedians. The stage/room set-up is better than HoB, but the sound can be pretty bad. People's does lend itself to more people potentially being there for a different, random event happening at the same time though. Drinks are kind of expensive ($9 pitchers I believe) and the room can be extremely cold sometimes (often).
Any others happening around the state?

We talked to Danny Franks, owner of Penguin's Comedy Club in Cedar Rapids. It's an exciting time to be a comic in Eastern Iowa, and Danny is a big reason for that: Penguin's has DOUBLED the number of open mics they host at the club, and have also begun sponsoring open mics at outside venues to get comedians in the area more stage time.
Tell Danny I said hi, Dan!
