    Open Mic List/recommendations

I'm looking for some open mic recommendations around the city, that you know are good places to perform.

I know http://www.gigglechick.com/openmics/nyc_openmics.php is a pretty good list for the shows, but some of them are defunct and it is definitely not a definitive list of them all in the city.

Post the Open Mic info you know about (or are hosting) and I'll put them in this post to keep an updated list on them.

    Monday:

    OCHI'S MOTEL at Comix (Weekly)
    6:30 & 9pm
    $5

Email John Morrison to be in the lottery by noon Saturday for either show.

    Tuesday:

BRING IT! at PIT (Peoples Improv Theater)
    11:00pm
    Free

Sign up before 11pm to get in the lottery for the show.

    Wednesday:

    The Lighthouse at Underground Bar
    5 minutes
    NO cover, 1 drink minimum
    7pm-9pm

Email before Tuesday to get in the lottery for the show.

    Thursday:

The Limerick House Open Mic (Weekly)
    6:00pm
    Free

Sign up starts at 5:45pm, but 5:30pm would be a safer bet for choosing a spot. The show is held upstairs, so once you enter the Limerick house you will see a set of stairs to your left, before you hit the bar, and the show is up there.

    Friday:

Gutbucket at UCB Theatre (Once a Month)
    Midnight
    Free

Sign up between 11:00 and 11:35 by putting your name in the bucket by the ticket booth. Fifteen names will be drawn at random, then posted before midnight (so you know if and when you're going on).

Well my friend Matt Nagin hosts an open mike at Rififi tomorrow night. Sign up is at 9:30; show at 10. Everyone gets up but you must get there before 10:30. The order of comics is randomly selected.

    That one is fun.

Do you know if I have to be 21 to perform there? I've had that issue with some of the open mics that are in bars. Some are OK with it, some will let you perform, but not drink and others won't let you in the door.

This kid comes by who is 19 and he performs.

OCHI'S MOTEL at Comix on Mondays!

A weekly workout room booked and hosted by Sean Donnelly & Joe Powers. Ochi's Motel has rooms aplenty for anyone with 4 minutes of talent looking for a warm microphone and a soft spotlight. From touring pros to NYC's freshest stand-up, improv & sketch artists, the Motel has earned its reputation as "a stand-up place" for 4 years running. Email ochismotel[at]gmail.com to get put "in the hat" for the weekly, randomly drawn cast list. (Performers donate $5 to the week's prize kitty, 1 item minimum for all.)

Thanks Dan for the open mic. I sent them an email so hopefully I can get in next week.

Mo, if that's the case then I'll definitely be there.

Is the Rififi open mic the Mo Diggs Open Mic (that's what they have on their site)? I'm just looking for a title so I could put it in the first post.

    Re: Open Mic List/recommendations

Tonight I am co-hosting Gut Bucket at UCB with Pete Holmes at midnight (or whenever Death By Roo Roo ends).

Lottery sign-up is from 11 - 11:35, there are 15 spots and the lineup will be posted by midnight.

This is going to be my last show before taking a hiatus to await the arrival of my kid and then spend some time figuring out how he works.

Thanks Mo. Sorry I didn't sign up for your open mic at the Rififi, I came early and they said you weren't there so I went to a friends show to hang out for a bit and he gave me time for a set. But next week, if it's a weekly open mic, I'll be there for sure.

Charles, I'll be there tonight for Gutbucket. Last time I went to Gutbucket, a year ago, was my first time ever and you were also hosting that show as well as Pete Holmes. Hopefully I can say hello before I black out from the nervousness.

    Re: Open Mic List/recommendations

I did the Limerick House Open Mic yesterday and enjoyed the room and the comics who performed. The audience was mainly comics, that trickled in and out of the show room, so on average people were performing for 5-7 comics in the room.

I personally enjoy a smaller room, especially since I'm starting out, and although comics can be the worst audience, I thought it was a manageable enough room to go back to. Come to the next one and be the judge for yourself.

    Re: Open Mic List/recommendations

Hay folks. I will be visiting soon, any new recommendations since these posts? I don't have a lot of comic friends out there so I appreciate any advice you can hand me. I would especially like to know about the non rapey places considering I will be travelling to and from the open mics on my own most of the time.

Thanks! I am checking out gigglechick as well

    Re: Open Mic List/recommendations

All the Ochi's ones are good. Monday Motel, the Wednesday Faux Show, and the monthly Friday Virgin Mic.

Gutbucket at the UCB is the best, hands down, but it's not so easy getting on.

Superego at Ochi's is good too, it used to be at Parkside Lounge and was good there, but now the early show is at New York Comedy Club. I haven't been there since it moved.

I've heard good things about Bring It at the PIT but I haven't been to it. Also, there's a Maui Taco in midtown that has one in the basement every weeknight, but those are definitely hit-or-miss.

Let's start this thread back up! I'm looking for good mics. Also, check out http://www.badslava.com, in my opinion the best New York open mic list (certainly the most up to date).

Thank you for the site! I will come back and update my experiences as I have them. 3 or so weeks should get me a few NY mics under the belt

Ditto to this and I would definitely recommend Bring It at the PIT. I might even see you there...

The trouble I've found with the NYC open mics is that you're going to have to pay to get into the good ones and that the free ones are usually hit and miss (often times more miss than hit).

    Re: Open Mic List/recommendations

Kate Berlant hosts a great open mike at the Cake Shop every Tuesday from 6-8 (sometimes 6:30-8:30). It's free, plus 2 for 1 drinks and most everybody gets up. Sign up around 5-5:30 and you'll probably get time. Lots of good people stop by as well.

    O'Hanlon's. Fridays. 6-8 PM.

    14th St and 1st Ave. It's a good one.

I also agree that Kate Berlant's show is great!
