There's an open mic in Ochi's on Sunday evenings now, too, and it's 18+.

Is this still going on? :vvv:

"The KINGDOM OF HEAVEN is the best open mic in NYC. It's hosted by Timmy Williams from IFC's The Whitest Kids U' Know and John F. O'Donnell from Comedy Central's Fresh Faces. Each show gives you TEN COMEDIANS of all levels, some new, some professional, working out new material. Then the COMEDIAN OF MERIT goes up and closes out the show with a long set of supreme funniness. Every Wednesday at The Creek and The Cave. Sign up is at 7:30pm. Show starts at 8pm. FREE!"

Just a reminder that you should support all free mics or mics that give money back to the comics or (if all else fails) ones where there is a drink minimum since it aids the venue and NOT some dude who wants to leech off young talent.

Ochi's Motel raffles off prizes and gives all the money back to comedians who either brought people or were lucky enough to win the last raffle. If you go enough, chances are you'll win most of your money back eventually. Most comics I've talked to say it one of the few paid mics they'll do.

This is just one of many mics that support talent rather than hurt them. The reason Ochi's charges money is to support the good vibe of the room, and not to pad Sean Donnelly's wallet (though, Sean does dress like he's in desperate need of money, so if you'd like to volunteer some funds, feel free). I intend to see all you dirt bags starting in late March. I'm NYC bound and this thread is going to expedite matters visa vie finding places to make funny when I get there.

In addition to recommendations, are there any rooms one should avoid starting out in NY?

I'm going to be in NYC Friday August 27th and Saturday the 28th. A friend recommended I do The Creek and Cave on Friday, but I'm also considering Stand Up NY. Any recommendations?

Also, I'm going to try to do a lot of recording for my podcast (CB Radio), any suggestions for comedians I should try to get on?

There's a free mic at 5pm on Saturday afternoons that usually has a lot of funny comics at it. It's called The Woodshed, and it's at Legion Bar off the Graham stop on the L Train in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
