Well, not "every" comic, Doug...
pg--Someday, I'll get INTERRUPTED...I will...I know it...--seattle
PS--Every show at the VERA stage (aka "the other stage that's doing comedy at Bumbershoot") has been absolutely packed, with disappointed people wandering away from the stand-by line as the each show's last performer has gone up.
But, maybe it's the weather...maybe it's the increase in ticket prices...maybe it's the frustration of not getting in to see the "real" comedy shows at the other two venues with "people they've heard of" performing...but there's a different vibe to the crowds this year...
Dampened is the word I'll use.
In my set, yesterday, I looked out at a room of bundled up in Gore-Tex, gray-skinned, unhappy people...where normally, the crowd is summery and buoyant. It felt more like taking the stage at a union hall with a room full of teachers who are deciding whether or not to go out on strike--rather than a festive group of people who have been having a great time all day and want to keep that great time going with a fun show of comedy.
Don't get me wrong...it was still a blast to go up to a packed house early in the evening on a Sunday. And, as far as my set went, I felt it went well...got that nice "whoosh" from about a minute in to my set, building all the way up to a strong closing run, that a festival audience will give you...
...but, at least in this corner of the festival grounds, the vibe felt a lot like the weather looked...
Of course, if you got in to see all of the wonderful shows that Bumbershoot has offered this year that you really, really, wanted to see...I can't imagine a little rain made a damn bit of difference to you.![]()
