I'm frustrated because there has been such potential for Seattle to be a great comedy town, filled with awesome comedy performers getting to play for appreciative comedy audiences...and we're not. Now I'm not a common show goer in the comedy scene in Seattle, seeing how I live about 90 minutes away, but I go when I can.
It seems that the audiences are not very, lets say, energetic? Its a seattle stereotype, but its pretty damn true. Too many people in a hipster stance who can't laugh and geeks too afraid to show emotion. At least in my experience.
Do I have this completely wrong?

PS to Ubershen--Seattle is filled with comedy fans and many of those comedy fans are comedy nerds (in the "term of endearment/Hard & Phirm" connotation of that term)...and some of those Seattle area comedy nerds are actually participants on this board...but look how dead this Seattle-specific comedy thread is...
(This wasn't the frustration that made me start this thread, but it is certainly part of my lingering frustration with being part of the lost potential inherent in the Seattle comedy scene.)
What little activity there is here on this subforum are usually from non-active board participants who drop in just to advertise their upcoming show and then disappear... There's never any discussion about these shows and, worse, there's certainly no "post-show" discussion, which is what helps drive a vital comedy scene...word of mouth.
Where's the excitement about what awesome stuff is coming up...the stuff that people here really can't wait for--the kind of enthusiasm found on other threads for things happening in other towns on this board? And then, where's the "oh my God, THAT was awesome" discussion of things that people have seen?
I've long worried that the Seattle alt-comedy boom was, at best, a fad...defined by rather soft and spread-thin audience interest...or worse, a cult of specific personalities...where audiences came simply because they were friends of specific individuals and that it rarely managed to inspire people outside of the core group of friends (and when many of those specific individuals moved on to New York, Los Angeles, Boston or San Francisco...the scene's impact was left devastated...)
I no longer know if my opinions or observations have any accuracy...as I've lost confidence in my own perspective. I'm as lost and confused as anyone here.
I do know that people love comedy in Seattle...and that people love the kind of comedy that I love in Seattle...and there are people in Seattle who want to give people the kind of comedy that I love...and yet???

I do know that I'm as frustrated as a FAN of comedy, living in Seattle...as I am as a PERFORMER of comedy, living in Seattle (and that's really fucking frustrated, in case you need that variable defined.)

Living in any city besides NYC or LA can be very frustrating for a comedian. Your city is so big, and yet the ceiling seems so low. Alternative is a cute name in the big 2 cities because there's so many rooms and so many big names to share the stage with. But in other cities "alternative" just means less money and less stage time.
You have my sympathies, PG. Cities don't change like people do.

Hey, you feel frustrated, try and do stand up in Mexico City where the edgiest comedian people know is Robin fuggin' Williams. The only thing I could tell you is what I tell myself, get better, much better and then you can everyone along. Until then, work, work, work.
That was SO not true just a couple of years ago. Seattle was filled to over-capacity with comedians of so many different styles...comedians who were worthy of the type of adulation that is given to comedians of other much more recognized scenes.Originally Posted by Goodspaceguy

oh hey, that's me up there, being drunk and excited after bridgetown last year.... i never did that element joke again but i do still indulge in the cupcake one from time to time.
ron funches let me know i was on this post and so it's funny that it is kind of relevant to what is happening in portland right now... i dunno much about seattle, but comedy is exploding like whoa in portland right now. at least imho. the difference between when i started a year ago and now is crazy. there are like 5-10 monthly showcases going in in bars and coffee shops and shit all over town, plus the two comedy theaters. and harvey's exists too.
so i run a blog to try to keep track of this kind of stuff.... the scene that is. i love it to death and think it will only get bigger, what with increasing interest in open mics and in bridgetown. check it out if you're in portland and you want to see/do comedy. i also run the mt. tabor mic so i want to hear from you. i love you. (i love you ron specifically, because you are one of the best.)
