Yes! that was great.
Recap:
The hottest fucking night in the Punchline since a Dave Chapelle show. When there's a CD recording, we have to turn off the fans, since you can hear them oscillating on the recording.
But the crowd stuck it out, both shows.
The biggest crowd of stoners who weren't hippies came out on 4/20 to see Doug "Superhighme" Benson. The crowd really knew who he was and what he was about. Normally, we have a lot of tourist traffic who don't know Lizz Winstead does political humor, or that LuNell works blue or whatever. But we had nearly 400 (should I say nearly 420?) people for the two shows who were ready for Doug.
Moshe Kasher emceed the show. He's one of my favorite SF comics who recently moved to LA, but still works a lot up here. He has a faux-superior attitude onstage, while still managing to be self-deprecating.
Graham Elwood did his first show at the Punchline. It was my first time seeing him do standup, after hearing him on numerous podcasts. The first show, he did the best I've ever seen him do. The second show, the worst show I've ever seen him do. That's how the math works, people. Graham is awesome. But you probably knew that already if you read this board. He's like Jimmy Pardo with material.
Then Doug came on. Both shows were great. I think the second crowd was better. Doug did the best fart joke ever. Really raised the Fart-Bar. Overall, it was a mix of so-old-it's-new-again and new material. As he was recording for a CD, it was all stuff not on Professional Humidorian. The second show was a little over an hour. It would be a great CD from beginning to end, with maybe the fart from the first show cut in. that fart was ring-tone worthy.
Next up for me, I'll be seeing lots of you in Portland.
May in SF has Mary Lynn Rajskub at the Punch, and Al Madrigal, Janeane Garofalo/Marc Maron/Paul Gilmartin, Paul F Tompkins at Cobb's.
