That said, I think Fred Armisen is given free rein to play characters of assorted races and ethnicities because of his own varied background, just like Maya Rudolph and probably various others. As long as they avoid the historically maligned "100% white person playing 100% brown person" - and they've done it regardless, like Hammond's Jesse Jackson and Fallon's Chris Rock - they look at the racial ambiguity of Barack Obama as a gift.
Remember when they held "open auditions" to replace Phil Hartman as Clinton? Tim Meadows was in there, and that was, of course, played as a joke. Maya Rudolph, on the other hand, can go either way. I am not sure how that all fits together but ultimately, I like to think that SNL is taking a more global approach to race and not the reductive USA perspective.
Yes, but my point was that Fred may be a mixture of different ethnicities, but none of them are black (or African). Maya Rudolph is at least part black. For the record, I find it a little offensive when Darrell Hammond plays Jesse Jackson too.
Political correctness aside, I think most people in the country define Barack Obama as black. Just like most people would define Tiger Woods as black. You're right though, sometimes race can be a gray area; I don't know what you would call Rashida Jones (besides hot, am I right guys? High five)
