Want your shot at doing stand-up on "Late Show"? Read on.

Late Show with David Letterman Talent Coordinator Eddie Brill is conducting a contest in which the winner will get a stand-up spot on an upcoming "Late Show." The contest is a product of Talenthouse.com, a new social networking site for artists. Talenthouse empowers artists from all genres by enabling them to collaborate with one another on various projects through an online submission process called "Artist Invites," according to the press materials.

The contest is open to both established and aspiring stand-up comics. Musical comedy and character comedy submissions are not currently being accepted. To get in the running, you need to join Talenthouse, create an artist profile, and then submit your profile for this Artist Invite. The Talenthouse community will vote for their favorite comedians from these submissions. Eddie Brill will invite the top 7 highest rated submissions to perform live at a venue in the United States, and then the finalist will be chosen from this live performance and invited to Letterman.

As a comedian, I would be scared to do this as a young comic. I've talked with comics who have done Letterman that have said it is MUCH worse to go on the Late Show before you are ready than to not be on at all. A bad set can set your career back much more than you have opportunity to grow through it.

That said, if you are ready and your material is ready for the national stage, more power to you. Just be ready for the fallout if you aren't.
